Chapter 5 - THE CRACKED MARBLE

The young woman lowered the phone slowly.
She didn't hang up.
She left the line open, letting the faint sound of a keyboard clacking on the other end echo faintly in the tense air of the boutique.
She stepped closer to the older woman.
The height difference vanished as she squared her shoulders, towering over the matriarch of the family.
The scattered emeralds on the floor glittered under the warm chandelier, looking less like royal jewels now and more like shards of broken glass.
The older woman pressed her back flat against the glass showcase.
A soft tink echoed as her beige jacket brushed against a crystal figurine on the shelf behind her.
"You can't," the older woman whispered, her voice trembling so badly the words were nearly unintelligible. "You signed the non-disclosure. You signed the papers."
The young woman smiled.
It was a cold, humorless expression that didn't reach her eyes.
"Papers signed under duress are just expensive toilet paper," the young woman replied softly.
"And your son was too busy hiding behind your pearls to notice I was recording every single conversation."
The older woman’s knees buckled slightly.
She caught herself on the edge of the glass counter, her fingers leaving greasy smudges across the pristine surface.
The high-end melodrama of the luxury boutique had completely evaporated, replaced by the raw, suffocating terror of absolute ruin.
The family name—built on decades of stolen fortunes, buried scandals, and untouchable arrogance—was about to be shredded into confetti.

And it was all resting on a single phone call.
