Chapter 1 - THE ANATOMY OF A SHADOW

A close-up shot of an elegant young woman with dark hair styled in a sleek bun, wearing a black one-shoulder dress and gold hoop earrings.

She has a thin red scratch on her left cheek.

A man's hand, wearing a dark suit sleeve with a white cuff, gently touches her face near her nose.

The background is softly blurred with warm indoor lighting from a formal dinner setting.

The camera is static and the lighting is warm and dramatic.

The pad of his index finger pressed against her skin.

It was freezing.

The stark contrast between the icy temperature of his digit and the burning heat of her cheek sent a microscopic shiver down her spine.

She did not flinch.

Her posture remained rigidly straight, her spine locked into an invisible steel rod.

The black fabric of her one-shoulder dress clung to her collarbone, absorbing the ambient light of the room.

Just millimeters away from his fingertip, a harsh red swelling marred her pale complexion.

It was a fresh, angry bruise.

The skin was raised, pulsing slightly with the erratic rhythm of her heartbeat.

The man’s thumb hovered in the air, the pristine white cotton of his shirt cuff glowing under the chandelier.

A heavy silver cufflink dug into the edge of his tailored dark blue sleeve.

He traced the invisible border of the red swelling.

He did not apply pressure.

It was a touch designed to measure property, not to offer comfort.

The heavy gold hoop earring hanging from her left lobe swayed slightly.

It caught the flickering amber light of the candles, casting a curved, dancing shadow across the tense column of her neck.

She kept her gaze fixed straight ahead.

Her dark eyes were entirely hollowed out.

The warm, golden light of the luxury dining room reflected in her pupils, but the illumination did not reach the iris.

The silence between them was thick, heavy with the scent of roasted meat and expensive red wine.

Behind him, the blurred silhouettes of the dinner guests remained perfectly still.

No one dared to pick up a fork.

No one dared to exhale.

The clinking of crystal and silver had ceased entirely the moment his hand breached her personal space.

The air in the room grew stagnant.

The heat from the massive crystal chandelier above pressed down on her bare shoulder.

"You have everything you want."

May you like

The words were dropped into the silence like heavy stones into a dry well.
