THE WEIGHT OF GOLDEN CAGES / Chapter 5 / 6

Chapter 5 - THE SEVERING OF THE TIE

The silence in the dining room reached a deafening pitch.

The spilled red wine had finally stopped dripping onto the Persian rug.

The man in the dark blue suit remained leaning forward, his chest heaving.

He watched the tear fall from her eye, his jaw muscles flexing in anticipation of her surrender.

She tilted her chin upward just a fraction of an inch.

She stepped directly into his space.

The toe of her black stiletto bumped gently against the leather of his Oxford shoe.

She leaned in, her face stopping mere inches from his neatly trimmed beard.

She did not raise her voice.

She did not inject an ounce of anger into her tone.

Her vocal cords vibrated with the terrifying, absolute calmness of a judge delivering a final verdict.

"Adrián Fuentes..."

The name rolled off her tongue, cold and precise.

He stiffened.

The air hitched in his throat.

His eyes darted frantically, searching her face for the submission he was accustomed to extracting.

He found nothing but smooth, impenetrable obsidian.

"...you are free."

The whisper sliced through the heavy, wine-soaked air.

It was not an apology.

It was not a defense against his accusations.

It was a complete and total eviction.

She severed the invisible rope he had tied around her neck.

She handed him back the ghost of Valentina.

She handed him back the massive dining room, the crystal chandeliers, the terrified guests, the burning bruise on her cheek.

She didn't want any of it anymore.

She stood back, putting exactly two feet of distance between them.

Her gold hoop earring caught the light one last time as she settled into her new posture.

She was no longer the golden box.
