Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The house was a sanctuary of glass and polished mahogany, a place where the air always felt heavy with the scent of expensive lilies and the unspoken resentment of generations. Emily stood at the top of the grand staircase, her hand resting instinctively on her burgeoning belly. Seven months. Seven months of trying to prove she wasn't just an intruder in the life of Ethan’s family. But Margaret was the architect of this house, and every corner of it was designed to make Emily feel small.

Margaret stood a few steps behind her, her presence a cold weight on the back of Emily’s neck. She didn't need to speak; her silence was a weapon she wielded with surgical precision. 'You look tired, Emily,' Margaret murmured, her voice like silk over broken glass. 'Perhaps you should rest. The stress of carrying that child... it’s clearly fraying your nerves.'

Emily turned slightly, catching a glimpse of the older woman’s sharp, feline eyes. Margaret wore a champagne-colored blouse that caught the afternoon light, looking as immaculate and unyielding as a statue. 'I’m fine, Margaret. I just wanted to go to the nursery.'

'The nursery,' Margaret repeated, a ghost of a smile touching her lips. 'So optimistic. Let us hope the nursery is ever occupied, shall we?'

That was the crux of it. The constant, gnawing doubt that Margaret planted like a seed in Emily’s mind. She wanted to scream, to shove the words back down the woman’s throat, but she was trapped. She was the outsider, the 'unstable' one in Margaret's meticulously curated narrative. As Emily turned back to descend the stairs, the atmosphere shifted, tightening into a taut wire of impending catastrophe. She didn't see the hand moving toward her back, but she felt the change in the air—a sudden, sharp intake of breath, a predator’s calculated strike.
