Chapter 3 - The Whisper in the Dark

The room remained blurred, the edges of her vision darkening at the corners. Footsteps—slow, rhythmic, deliberate—approached. Margaret did not rush. She descended the staircase as if walking down an aisle, her posture perfect, her face a mask of calculated indifference. She stopped just inches from Emily’s face, casting a shadow that swallowed the light.
Margaret knelt, her knees hitting the floor with an audible creak of leather. She reached out, her fingers digging cruelly into Emily’s shoulder, forcing the younger woman to look at her. The grip was tight, bruising, a stark contrast to the elegant appearance she presented to the world.

'Tell Ethan you slipped,' Margaret whispered, her voice a low, gravelly vibration that seemed to bypass Emily’s ears and burrow directly into her mind. 'Tell him you were clumsy. That your pregnancy made you lightheaded. Do you understand, Emily? You are a fragile, troubled girl, and you slipped on your own incompetence.'
The threat hung in the air, acidic and lethal. Margaret’s eyes were devoid of any empathy, cold, dead things reflecting a singular desire: to erase Emily from this house, from Ethan’s life, from existence itself. Emily’s throat was tight, her voice struggling to find its way out, but the fear was paralyzing. She looked into those eyes and saw the abyss.
