The Weight of the Heel / Chapter 4 / 6

Chapter 4 - The Splintered Shelf

The blonde woman took a sudden step backward.

Her bare heel slipped slightly on the smear of black shoe polish.

The man in the blue suit did not give her time to find her balance.

He reached down and wrapped his large hands around the thick, cylindrical wooden stump stool.

The veins in his forearms pressed hard against the cuffs of his white dress shirt.

He lifted the heavy block of solid wood effortlessly into the air.

His jaw clamped shut.

He swung the stool sideways with the momentum of a wrecking ball.

The heavy wood crashed directly into the center of the light oak shelving unit.

The sound of shattering timber echoed down the grand hallway.

Splinters of expensive wood exploded outward, raining down onto the pristine marble.

Silk scarves and designer leather bags tumbled into the wreckage, buried under jagged wooden planks.

Dust plumed into the bright overhead lighting.

The man dropped the wooden stump onto the rubble.

It landed with a final, definitive thud.
