Chapter 11 - The Warmth in the Dark

Ten minutes later.

Jax descends the grand double staircase back into the warm, golden light of the main foyer.

Clara is already there, sitting on the soft leather bench near the entryway. She is holding Maya close to her chest, tears streaming down her pale face as she kisses her infant daughter’s forehead over and over again. Leo sits beside her, wrapped tightly in Jax’s heavy black leather jacket, his small hand holding his mother’s cotton gown as if he will never let go again.

Maya’s cheeks are no longer blue; the child’s breathing is steady, deep, and warm under the thick fleece lining of the coat.

As Jax steps onto the Oriental rug at the base of the stairs, Leo looks up. The small boy stands up, letting the heavy leather jacket fall back onto the bench, and walks straight toward the towering, blood-stained stranger who had broken into the world’s darkest house to save them.

Jax stops walking. He drops down onto one knee in front of the boy, just as he had done outside in the snowbanks twenty minutes ago.

Leo doesn't hesitate. He steps forward and wraps his small arms tightly around Jax’s broad, scarred neck, burying his face into Jax’s shoulder.

"Thank you," Leo whispers, his small body shaking with quiet, safe sobs. "You saved us. You really came back."

Jax stands frozen for a moment, unaccustomed to the touch of human gratitude or warmth after twelve years of solitary wandering. Slowly, deliberately, Jax raises his large, scarred arms and wraps them around the boy, holding him secure against his chest.

"I told you, kid," Jax murmurs, his deep voice thick with emotion he hadn't felt in over a decade. "Neither of you is alone."

Clara looks up from her baby, her eyes shining with profound, eternal gratitude. "He’s gone?" she asks quietly.

May you like

Jax nods once, his steel-gray eyes soft as he looks at the mother and her children. "He’ll never hurt anyone again. The house is yours now. The night is over."

From outside the shattered front oak doors, the faint sound of approaching sirens begins to echo through the mountain pass—the county sheriff’s department, finally responding to the distress calls as the storm begins to break over the ridge.
