Chapter 3 - The Shield of Leather

Jax strips off his heavy black leather jacket in one swift, practiced motion. Beneath it, he wears only a faded thermal shirt that clings to his broad, tattooed chest, the icy wind immediately flattening the fabric against his skin. Without hesitation, he drapes the massive, fleece-lined jacket around Leo and the infant, wrapping them together in a thick, windproof cocoon that retains the intense body heat his frame had built up during the long ride.

The scent of worn leather, engine oil, tobacco, and clean sweat instantly fills Leo’s senses, chasing away the metallic smell of pure fear. Underneath the heavy leather coat, Leo pulls Maya closer. The baby lets out a tiny, gasping cough, her body shivering as the residual warmth of the jacket begins to thaw her frozen limbs.

"Stay here," Jax commands softly, setting his helmet down beside the boy to block the biting crosswind. "Keep her wrapped tight."

Jax stands up. The transformation in his posture is instantaneous and terrifying. The gentleness he had shown to the children vanishes, replaced by a cold, predatory focus that makes the watching villagers instantly take three steps back into the shadows.

Jax turns his gaze toward the towering iron gates of Blackwood Estate. The gates are ten feet high, wrought from heavy black iron spiked at the top, secured by a thick steel chain and a heavy brass padlock. Through the bars, the snow-covered driveway curves upward toward the grand manor house, where warm yellow light continues to stream from the second-story windows.

Jax reaches down to the saddlebag of his motorcycle. He unbuckles the leather strap and pulls out a heavy, twenty-inch steel breaker bar—a heavy-duty tool meant for changing truck tires, but in his hands, it looks like a mace forged for war.

He walks toward the iron gates with long, deliberate strides. His boots crush the ice beneath his feet with the steady, ominous rhythm of a marching drum.

"Reed!" the village elder calls out, his voice trembling from the perimeter wall. "Don't do it! Dr. Vance has private security guards from the city! They have weapons! You'll get yourself killed, and they'll come for us next!"

Jax doesn't even turn his head. "Then you should have stayed in your warm houses," he growls over his shoulder, his voice cutting through the howl of the storm. "If you won't protect a child in the snow, you don't get a say in how I break down the door."

Jax reaches the gates. He doesn't bother looking for a key or attempting to pick the lock. He wedges the flat chisel-end of the heavy steel breaker bar directly between the links of the thick iron chain wrapped around the central pillars.

He sets his feet in the snow, his broad shoulders tensing beneath his thermal shirt, the tattoos on his neck bulging as his massive back muscles lock into place.

CRACK.

The sound echoes across the quiet valley like a rifle shot.
