The Weight of Silver / Chapter 5 / 6

Chapter 5 - The Blue Uniform

A heavy, mechanical clunk echoed from the hallway.

The sound vibrated through the floorboards, traveling up the mahogany table legs.

The crystal droplets on the chandelier began to shiver.

The laughter in the dining room died instantly.

Guests turned their heads toward the entrance.

The grand, gold-paneled double doors slid open automatically.

They didn't just open; they were forced apart with aggressive speed.

Standing in the center of the threshold was a massive figure.

He wore a dark blue uniform.

A polished silver badge caught the blinding light of the hallway.

The police officer stood dead still, his cap pulled low over his eyes.

His hand rested casually, lethally, on the heavy black belt at his waist.

Behind him, the flashing red and blue lights of patrol cars painted the mansion’s pristine walls.

The colors bled through the sheer curtains like a warning siren made visual.

The officer stepped forward.

His heavy black boots crunched against the hardwood floor.

Step. Step. Step.

Every footfall sounded like a gavel striking wood.

He didn't look at the wealthy guests.

He didn't look at the opulent feast.

His eyes locked directly onto the woman in the dark red dress.
