Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House

Eleanor’s crystal glass slipped.
It hit the mahogany table, tipping over in slow motion.
Water spilled across the polished wood, mirroring the puddle at Lin’s feet.
Eleanor’s jaw unhinged.
Her carefully painted lips parted in a silent, ugly circle of shock.
Her eyes bulged, darting from the officer to the flashing lights outside.
The haughty elegance melted from her face, leaving only raw, naked panic.
She took a clumsy step backward.
Her stiletto heel caught on the edge of the expensive Persian rug.
She stumbled, her arms flailing, destroying the illusion of royalty in a single second.
Lin sat perfectly still.
She did not smile.
She simply reached down, grabbed a linen napkin, and began to dry her face.
The officer reached into his chest pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"Eleanor Vance," the officer's voice boomed, deep and unforgiving.
"You have the right to remain silent."
Under the table, little Leo watched his grandmother tremble.
He looked at his broken silver spoon, then at Lin.
"Mummy was right," Leo whispered to his toy.
"The mud did ruin the rug."
Lin stood up slowly, supporting her heavy belly with one hand.

She stepped over the puddle of water, leaving the ruined dinner behind.
She didn't look back as the handcuffs clicked shut.
