Eleanor straightened her plum dress, her nostrils flaring in sheer disbelief.
She stepped closer, her shadow completely engulfing the two children against the floral wall.
Toby didn't flinch.
He lifted his chin, his voice dropping into a razor-thin, trembling line.
"Touch her again, and everyone will know what you buried," Toby spat.
The air in the hallway turned instantly ice-cold.
Eleanor’s dark eyes widened, then narrowed until they were two sharp slits of black obsidian.
She leaned down, her face coming within inches of Toby’s forehead.
The smell of her cloying lavender perfume made the boy’s stomach turn.
"You'll be buried beside her!" she hissed through gritted teeth.
Lily buried her face into the back of Toby’s grey hoodie, her small hands clutching his waist.
"Toby, don't..." she whimpered, her tears soaking through his shirt fabric.
