Chapter 6 - THE SILENT WALL

The plaster beneath the paper was cracked wide open.

And sticking out from the dark, hollow cavity inside the wall was a thick, matted clump of long blonde hair.

It wasn't Eleanor’s bleach-blonde hair.

It was dusty, dry, and bound together by a faded blue velvet hairband—the exact hairband Richard’s wife had worn the night she disappeared six months ago.

Richard fell backward half a step, his face draining of every drop of color.

His breath caught in his throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated horror escaping his lips.

"Dad..." Lily whimpered, hugging Toby’s arm tight against her chest.

"Mommy's still inside that wall."

Eleanor scrambled backward on her hands and knees toward the front door, her black heels skidding helplessly against the polished floorboards.

Richard didn't chase her.

He pulled his phone from his navy jacket, his thumb pressing the emergency button as he pulled his children behind his back once and for all.
