Chapter 14 - The Sovereign Verdict

Two days later, a formal press conference was held in the grand ballroom of the Grand Sovereign Hotel.

Reporters from every major financial network packed the room, their camera flashes illuminating the gold leaf and crystal chandeliers.

Arthur Sterling stood at the podium, dressed in an immaculate black suit. Beside him stood Toby, wearing a tailored navy suit that replaced his old green bellhop uniform.

"Effective immediately," Arthur announced into the bank of microphones, "the Sovereign Holdings Trust will liquidate three billion dollars in offshore reserves to establish the Richard Vance Foundation for Housing and Human Rights. Furthermore, the board has unanimously appointed Tobias Vance as the permanent trustee of the foundation."

The room erupted into a storm of questions and camera flashes.

Toby stepped up to the microphone, looking out over the crowd. He saw the marble floor where he had stood two days ago, covered in grey wool, making a choice between his job and his humanity.

"A building is only as strong as its foundation," Toby spoke clearly into the microphone. "And a society is only as good as how it treats the person standing in the rain at its front door."
