Chapter 7 - The Vault Below Wall Street

The black sedan carved through the rain-soaked streets of Manhattan, descending into the underground parking structures beneath the Financial District.
Twenty minutes later, Arthur led the children through a heavy blast door deep within the sub-basements of the old Federal Reserve building—a private, off-the-grid sanctuary Arthur had maintained since the Cold War.
The room was lit by warm halogen lamps, lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, antique computer monitors, and steel filing cabinets. In the center of the room stood a massive, circular brass vault door built directly into the bedrock.
Arthur set Maya down on a leather sofa, handing her a warm blanket. He walked over to a glass display case, unlocked it with a small key from his pocket, and withdrew a heavy, silver-bound ledger.
"Your mother left this with me ten years ago," Arthur said, laying the ledger on a wooden desk. "She knew that one day, the Vane Estate would trace her hiding place. She made me promise that if she ever disappeared, I would use this room to execute the counter-protocol."
Leo stepped up to the desk, staring at the pages filled with complex chemical formulas and biological diagrams. "How do we get her back?"
"The Syndicate thinks they hold all the cards," Arthur said, his eyes gleaming with a cold, predatory light. "They think Julianna is isolated. But they don't know that I still hold forty percent of the Vane Estate's voting stock. Tomorrow morning, at the emergency board meeting, I am going to demand an audit."

"They'll try to kill you," Leo said flatly.
"They already tried," Arthur replied grimly. "And they failed."
