Chapter 12 - The Twin's Shadow

Sam stared at the photograph. A sharp, blinding pain pierced through his temples—a violent, white-hot agony that made his knees buckle. Memories, fragmented and chaotic, began to tear through the fog of his mind like lightning through a dark cloud: high-frequency trading codes, encrypted satellite links, the sound of gunshots in a wet courtyard in Switzerland, and the face of an old man in a green work shirt handing him a leather-bound key.
"Arthur..." Sam gasped, clutching his head with both hands. "Arthur put me here..."
"He did," a deep, chilling voice echoed from the far dark corner of the basement.
Out of the shadows stepped the man in the immaculate charcoal-black Italian suit—the man who looked identical to Richard. He held a small silver cup of espresso in his left hand, taking a quiet sip before stepping into the light of the monitors.
Behind him, bound and gagged with heavy industrial tape, sat Richard, slumped in a folding metal chair, his face bruised and bleeding.
"Meet Julian Vance," the girl said, stepping back so she was positioned between Sam and the suit-clad man. "Richard’s twin brother. The Chief Executive Officer of the Sterling Syndicate."
Julian set his espresso cup down on a server rack with a soft, precise click. He smiled, a cold, empty expression that didn't reach his icy blue eyes.
"You've done very well, Agent Evelyn," Julian said, nodding toward the blonde girl. "You played the dirty, starving vagrant quite convincingly. Even managed to extract the trigger phrase from our old friend Sam."
Sam looked at Evelyn, a wave of profound betrayal crashing over him. "You... you were working with him?"
Evelyn didn't answer him. Her blue eyes remained cold, fixed entirely on Julian Vance.
"I don't work for you, Julian," Evelyn said quietly. "I work for the Chairman."

Julian laughed—a short, arrogant sound that filled the subterranean chamber. "The Chairman is an old fool sweeping floors in Manhattan! He has no power here. The servers in this room contain fifty-eight billion dollars in private offshore holdings. Once I execute the transfer at 4:15 PM, Vance Financial belongs to me, and your precious Chairman becomes a footnote in a federal indictment."
Julian pulled a small, silver thumb drive from his breast pocket and held it up between two fingers. "And all I need to authorize the final transfer is the biological key embedded in Sam's old military encryption code."
