Chapter 14 - The Wipe Protocol

Sam didn't hesitate. Driven by long-dormant military instincts that had been buried beneath twelve years of pancake batter and dishwater, he sprinted across the concrete floor.

He lunged past the bleeding, groaning body of Julian Vance, pulled the heavy silver coin from his apron, and jammed it into a circular slot at the base of the main server chassis.

The coin clicked into place with a heavy, magnetic snap.

SOVEREIGN OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.

INITIATING TOTAL PURGE PROTOCOL.

The green numbers on the dozens of monitors instantly turned a deep, blood red. Lines of code began to collapse, deleting themselves at a rate of millions of gigabytes per second. Across the global banking networks connected to the diner's hidden node, fifty-eight billion dollars of illicit offshore accounts were instantly frozen, re-routed, and transferred into the public treasury enforcement fund of the Federal Reserve.

Julian slumped against the server rack, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his eyes wide with absolute horror as he watched his empire evaporate from the glowing screens.

"No..." Julian choked out, his voice high and frantic. "No! My money... my system!"

May you like

"It was never your system, Julian," Evelyn said, stepping over him and pulling the silver thumb drive out of the terminal, crushing it beneath the heel of her tactical boot. "Arthur Vance built this network to catch rats like you. You spent seven years thinking you were outsmarting an old man, while he was using your own infrastructure to build the trap that just snapped shut."

The server fans slowly began to spin down, their high-pitched whine dropping into a low, dead silence. The red screens flickered twice and died, leaving the sub-basement illuminated only by the dull yellow beam of Sam's flashlight.
