Chapter 13 - The Cold Math of Betrayal

4:12 PM.

The air in the sub-basement felt suffused with ozone and heat as the rows of high-frequency server blades began to spin at maximum velocity, their cooling fans whining like jet engines preparing for takeoff.

Julian stepped toward the central terminal, plugging the silver thumb drive into a glowing USB port. Red lights flashed across the primary monitor.

ENTER PRIMARY SECURITY PASSPHRASE - SOVEREIGN OVERRIDE

"Come now, Sam," Julian said smoothly, turning to look at Sam with an extended hand. "Don't look at me like I'm the villain. My brother Richard is a pathetic, low-level worm who was content to let you rot in this greasy spoon while taking a small cut of the laundering fees. I am offering you an exit. Give me the passphrase, and I will transfer ten million dollars to any account in the world. You can spend the rest of your life on a beach in Belize."

Sam looked at Richard, who was squirming in the folding chair, tears of terror leaking from his eyes past the duct tape on his mouth. Then he looked at Evelyn, whose handgun was now drifting slowly away from Sam's chest—pointing directly toward Julian’s spine.

"He doesn't have the passphrase, Julian," Evelyn said, her voice echoing with absolute authority.

Julian paused, his eyes narrowing slightly as he glanced sideways at her. "What are you talking about?"

"The passphrase wasn't stored in his memory," Evelyn said, a tiny, cold smile touching her lips. "The passphrase was the coin."

Sam’s hand instinctively reached into his apron pocket, his fingers wrapping around the heavy, cold metal of the silver dollar the girl had left under the napkin forty-eight hours ago.

Julian’s face went pale. He spun around, reaching into his jacket for his own firearm, but Evelyn was faster.

Two suppressed gunshots cut through the air. Julian Vance gasped, dropping his silver phone as a round caught him cleanly in the shoulder, knocking him back against the main server rack. Blood splattered across the glowing green terminal screens.

"The silver dollar, Sam!" Evelyn yelled over the deafening roar of the server fans. "Put it into the drive slot on the primary terminal! Now!"
