Chapter 3 - The Toxin of Devotion

Downstairs in the kitchen, twenty minutes later, the house had fallen dead silent. Toby had stopped crying—not the peaceful silence of a sleeping baby, but the heavy, unnatural silence that follows total physical exhaustion.

Lucas sat at the kitchen table, his hands trembling as he stared at a small glass dropper bottle sitting beside the sink.

The bottle was unlabelled, made of thick amber glass. Evelyn had brought it home two weeks ago from a local apothecary run by an elderly herbalist in the valley. She claimed it was a natural calming tonic—a traditional blend of chamomile, valerian root, and sweet clove designed to soothe colic.

Slowly, driven by an instinct he couldn't name, Lucas stood up and walked to the sink. He picked up the amber bottle. He unscrewed the dropper and held it beneath his nose.

The smell was sweet, almost sickeningly so, like overripe cherries and bruised almond blossoms. But beneath the sweetness lay a faint, chemical metallic tang that made the hair on his arms stand up.

Lucas opened his phone with numb fingers. He typed the scent profile into a medical search bar: Sweet almond scent, metallic undertone, infantile lethargy, sudden fever.

The search results loaded instantly. His eyes scanned the text, his breath freezing in his throat.

Cyanogenic glycosides. Amygdalin. Prunus kernel extract. In high doses, it was a lethal poison. In trace, sub-lethal amounts administered daily, it produced systemic weakness, chronic respiratory distress, fever, and severe neurological irritation—symptoms easily mistaken for congenital infant failure or severe failure to thrive.

The phone slipped from Lucas's hand, clattering onto the linoleum floor.

He wasn't sick. Toby wasn't born fragile. He was being systematically poisoned.

Memory surged back into Lucas’s mind like a tidal wave of ice water. Twenty years ago... his middle brother, Caleb. He remembered Caleb lying in his crib, sweating, screaming, his small body burning with an unexplained fever while Evelyn sat beside him, spoon-feeding him "herbal tea" night after night until the screaming stopped forever.

Evelyn hadn't lost two sons to tragic illness. She had cultivated their deaths. She fed on the grief, on the total dependency it created in her surviving family, using tragedy as an anchor to chain her husband and her last remaining son to her side forever.

And now, Elena was her scapegoat. Evelyn was poisoning the baby, framing the young, unstable mother for neglect, preparing to purge Elena from the house and raise the surviving, brain-damaged child herself.

A raw, primal roar choked in Lucas's throat.

From the second floor, a loud, heavy bang echoed through the house, followed by a sharp, terrified scream.
