Chapter 8 - The Fallen Matriarch

Evelyn lay motionless beside the giant teddy bear, her hands trembling as she pressed them against her ribs. Her dark blue jacket was covered in dust from the floorboards. For the first time in her life, the severe, invincible matriarch looked frail—an old woman broken on the floor of her own house.
She looked up at her surviving son.
Lucas towered over her, his shadow completely engulfing her fallen form. His face was dark, illuminated only by the warm light from the nightstand lamp. His eyes held no warmth, no hesitation, no remaining trace of filial obedience.
"Lucas..." Evelyn rasped, her voice high and thin, clutching at her chest. "You... you hit your own mother? For her?"
"You poisoned him," Lucas said. His voice wasn't loud now. It was low, quiet, and cold enough to freeze the blood in her veins.
Evelyn’s eyes flickered with a sudden, sharp panic. "What... what are you talking about? I saved that child! She neglected him—"
"I smelled the bottle, Ma," Lucas interrupted, stepping closer until the steel-toed cap of his boot was inches from her head. "I smelled the bitter almonds. Just like the tea you used to give Caleb."
Evelyn gasped, her face draining of what little color remained. "Caleb was sick! I was his mother! I cared for him!"
"You killed him," Lucas spat, his voice trembling with a terrifying, contained rage. "You killed Thomas. You killed Pa. And you were going to kill Toby just to keep me locked in this house with you."
Beside the crib, Elena had pulled herself up. She sat on the floor, her back pressed against the dark walnut wood, her navy blue "MONTANA" hoodie disheveled. She reached up into the crib with trembling arms, carefully pulling little Toby down into her lap. She wrapped her arms around her baby, burying her face in his star-patterned onesie, weeping silently as she rocked him back and forth.
Evelyn tried to push herself up onto her elbows, her long silver hair hanging around her face like a shroud. "You can't prove anything, Lucas! This is my house! I built this family! You are nothing without me!"
"This house is a graveyard," Lucas said softly.
He turned his back on her, walking over to Elena. He dropped to his knees beside his wife, wrapping his massive arms around both Elena and the baby, shielding them with his broad body.
"Are you okay?" Lucas whispered, his voice cracking with tenderness as he kissed Elena's sweaty forehead.
Elena looked up at him, her dark, bruised eyes filling with fresh tears—not of terror, but of relief. "You saw," she choked out. "You finally saw."
May you like
"I see everything now," Lucas promised.
