THE CRIB OF SILENT LIES / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Silent Tears

The camera of Lucas's mind zoomed in tight, isolating his own face from the rest of the world.

He stood frozen in the doorway, his broad frame framed by the soft lighting of the hallway. Extreme close-up. The shallow depth of field blurred the horrifying scene behind him—the screaming baby, the wrestling women—leaving only his face in sharp, agonizing focus.

Tears sprang to Lucas’s eyes, hot and sudden.

His vision blurred. The dark red blood flushed into his cheeks as a silent sob racked his chest. His stubbled jaw trembled uncontrollably. His dark eyes, usually so calm and stoic, were wide with an unbearable, soul-crushing grief.

He wasn't just weeping for Elena. He wasn't just weeping for Toby.

He was weeping for Caleb. He was weeping for his brother Thomas. He was weeping for his father, who had died a broken, alcoholic husk in the cellar thirty years ago, never knowing why his family was cursed.

Every lie he had ever swallowed, every time he had defended his mother, every time he had told Elena to "be patient with Ma"—it all crushed down on his chest like a mountain of lead. He had brought the sheep into the wolf's den. He had handed his innocent wife and newborn son to the very monster that had consumed his childhood.

His breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. A single, heavy tear escaped his right eye, tracing a glistening path down through his stubble, hanging suspended from his jawline before falling onto his brown plaid shirt.

Behind him, the baby’s cries reached a fever pitch—a shrill, suffocating sound that sliced through the silent air.

You let them die, a voice whispered in the dark corners of his mind. You let her take them.

Lucas’s chest heaved. The weeping stopped.

Slowly, the grief in his eyes began to burn away, replaced by something cold, heavy, and terrifyingly clear. The red flush of agony faded from his skin, replaced by a deadly, pale calm.

His fists, hanging at his sides, clenched so tightly that the tendons in his forearms stood out like steel cables.
