THE EXPIRED THREAD / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Final Entry

That evening, as the sun set over the Seattle skyline, Arthur sat at his kitchen table in Apartment 3B.

The wooden filing cabinets were still there, but their locks were open, their drawers empty, their files transferred to the federal archives in Washington.

On the table sat Arthur's dark red leather ledger.

He held a black fountain pen in his right hand, his fingers steady, precise, and calm.

He opened the book to the final page, dated AUGUST 24, 2026.

In neat, copperplate cursive, Arthur wrote his final entry:

"Case 4192 closed. The four hundred dollars has been fully returned. Sarah's memory is clear. The thread is broken, and the account is balanced."

He set the pen down on the blotter.

Arthur reached over, picking up the small gold-framed photograph of his daughter, Sarah, smiling in the sunlight. He pressed his lips gently against the glass, setting it back in the center of his desk beside a small vase of fresh white lilies.

He walked over to the window, opening the glass frame to let in the sweet, cool evening air coming off the ocean.

High above the city, the stars were beginning to appear, bright and clear against the dark velvet sky.

Arthur Pendelton took a long, deep breath, stepped away from his desk, and turned off the light.
