Chapter 5 - The Architect in the Grey Suit

Arthur Pendelton walked slowly down the dark, rain-slicked sidewalk of 4th Avenue, his grey tracksuit damp from the mist, his small black umbrella held over his head.
He carried a brown paper grocery bag containing a small loaf of bread, a carton of milk, and the official printed receipt from Excel Fitness showing a four-hundred-dollar credit balance.
He arrived at the entrance of the St. Jude Apartments—a weathered, six-story brick building with an iron fire escape running up its facade.
Arthur climbed the carpeted stairs to Apartment 3B. He unlocked the heavy brass deadbolt, stepped inside, and pushed the door shut behind him.
The apartment was small, immaculate, and quiet.
The walls were lined not with framed family photos or warm landscape paintings, but with floor-to-ceiling wooden filing cabinets, each fitted with heavy iron keylocks.
Arthur set his grocery bag on the kitchen table. He took off his grey tracksuit jacket, hanging it carefully on a wooden hanger behind the door.
Beneath the cotton jacket, Arthur was wearing a thin, flexible black harness that held a tiny, high-definition digital recorder strapped directly against his ribs—the wire running discreetly beneath his collar.
He unclipped the recorder, plugged it into a encrypted docking station on his desk, and flipped a heavy toggle switch.
A red light blinks twice on his computer screen, followed by a green prompt: AUDIO FILE TRANSFERRED – EXCEL FITNESS LOBBY INCIDENT – FILE COMPLETE.
Arthur sat down in his leather armchair, rubbing his worn hands together to restore the circulation.

His frail, confused posture from the gym was gone. His back was straight, his chin lifted, his blue eyes sharp, cold, and calculating.
"Step one complete," Arthur whispered to the empty room, looking at a framed photograph on his desk of a young woman with dark hair who looked strikingly similar to Maya Lin. "They took the bait, Sarah. They think I'm just a ghost from their old files."
