Chapter 3 - The Public Vindication

A collective, audible gasp rippled through the gym lobby.
The spectator holding the water bottle shifted forward, capturing the exact moment Brandon’s face transformed from arrogant authority to pale, slack-jawed humiliation.
Arthur stood at the desk, his frail shoulders shaking, his hand clutching his white towel as he tried to absorb the words. "Four... four hundred dollars?"
"Yes, Mr. Pendelton," Maya said softly, her stern demeanor instantly melting into genuine warmth. She reached across the wooden counter, picking up the blue membership card, pressing it gently into Arthur’s calloused palm, and wrapping her fingers around his hand. "Every single cent will be refunded to your account before the sun comes up tomorrow. I am personally overriding the system ledger."
She reached beneath the counter, pulled out an official corporate voucher, stamped it with red ink, and handed it to the old man.
"Come on, sir," Maya said, stepping out from behind the desk and placing a gentle, protective hand on Arthur’s elbow. "Refund today, and I'm walking with you."
Arthur looked at her, tears welling up in his faded blue eyes, glistening under the bright fluorescent lights. "You... you don't have to do that, young lady."
"I want to, Mr. Pendelton," Maya smiled. "The doctor said you need your steps."
As Maya guided Arthur slowly away from the counter toward the long, elevated row of treadmills at the back of the gym, a sound began to build near the weight racks.
A man on a bench press started clapping. Then a woman on an elliptical joined in. Within five seconds, the entire gym erupted into a loud, rhythmic wave of applause and cheers aimed directly at the frail old man in the grey tracksuit.
Arthur lowered his head, a humble, radiant smile breaking across his wrinkled face as he stepped onto Treadmill 4.

Behind the desk, Brandon Vance stood frozen. He looked down at the glowing computer screen, then at the angry stares of the members around him. He felt small, exposed, and utterly ruined.
He grabbed his leather jacket from beneath the counter, shoved his locker keys into his pocket, and walked out through the double glass doors into the freezing night, leaving his shift unfinished.
