Chapter 3 - The Burgundy Tie

The heavy-set man did not stumble.
He planted his thick leather shoes firmly onto the floorboards.
He turned around slowly.
He looked down at the mess of glass, water, and red stains pooling at his feet.
He didn't bend down.
He didn't offer a hand.
He raised his chin, his fleshy neck bulging against the tight collar of his dress shirt.
He brushed a single drop of water from the sleeve of his grey suit.
His thick fingers moved to the center button of his jacket.
He pushed the button through the hole, a gesture of absolute, undisturbed arrogance.
He adjusted his burgundy tie, pulling it tighter against his throat.
His face flushed with sudden, hot color.
The veins at his temples pulsed, thick and blue under the skin.
He glared down at Clara.
His eyes were completely devoid of empathy, narrowed into two hard, black slits.
He planted his hands on his hips.

He leaned forward, letting his massive shadow fall directly over Clara’s face.
