Chapter 9 - The Erosion of Arrogance

The heavy-set man was entirely surrounded.

Every face in the room was turned toward him.

Dozens of pairs of eyes bored into his skin, completely devoid of sympathy.

They were not attacking him.

They were simply bearing witness.

The man’s chest stopped puffing out.

His grey suit jacket suddenly felt entirely too large, hanging awkwardly off his shrinking frame.

He looked at the older man with the silver hair.

The older man didn't flinch.

He looked at the young woman in the gown.

She raised an eyebrow, her posture utterly unyielding.

The man’s hands dropped from his hips.

His thick fingers twitched, suddenly unsure of where to go.

He took a half-step backward.

His heel bumped into his own chair.

The sound of his heavy breathing was the only noise left in his immediate orbit.

The power he had siphoned from the waitress evaporated.

He was drowning in the sheer volume of their silence.
