Chapter 10 - The Ledger of the Mind

The sedan door closed with a muted, heavy thud, sealing Julian inside the quiet luxury of the leather-trimmed interior.
The driver engaged the gear shift, and the car glided smoothly away from the village square, its tires rolling silently over the asphalt as the market faded into the gathering twilight behind them.
Julian leaned his head back against the leather headrest, looking out the tinted window at the passing fields. The sun had finally dipped below the mountains, leaving a deep indigo sky bruised with streaks of violet and crimson.
He reached into his vest pocket, pulling out a small, worn piece of silver foil—the clean wrapping from the hot meal Mrs. Miller had handed him eighteen months ago, which he had carried in his pocket through every deposition, every court battle, and every victory.

But as Julian looked out at the dark valley opening up before him, he knew that the world was still full of predatory men sitting in glass towers, waiting to devour the weak and the forgotten.
