Chapter 4 - The Twelve-Month Fire

The train left the rural siding at 4:15 AM, its iron wheels screaming against the icy rails as it snaked through the dark valley. Julian crouched inside an open boxcar filled with cedar timber, his hands wrapped in torn burlap to keep his fingers from freezing.
He spent the next twelve months in a state of hyper-focused, ruthless transformation.
He didn't return to the market. He didn't send a letter. Instead, he surfaced in Chicago under an assumed name, using the last of his father's hidden emergency cash to hire a disgraced former forensic accountant who had been blacklisted by Silas Vance a decade earlier. Working fourteen hours a day out of a damp basement apartment, Julian poured over thousands of pages of encrypted financial records, bank transactions, and shell-company registrations.
He learned the language of high-stakes corporate warfare. He studied every court ruling, every property seizure, and every fraudulent bankruptcy filed by Vance Financial over the past twenty years. He learned how Silas Vance hid his stolen assets behind layers of offshore trusts, and more importantly, he found the structural flaw in Vance’s current hostile takeover of the regional agricultural board.
Julian stopped eating garbage. He stopped running from bruises. He spent his nights in public libraries and evening law classes, absorbing corporate restructuring law with the desperate fury of a man preparing for his own execution. He shaved his face, cut his dark blonde hair into a sharp, military-style taper, and forced his posture to straighten until he no longer walked like a victim.
Every night when his eyes burned from analyzing columns of financial data, he closed his eyes and saw the warm sunset filtering through the rustic market stalls. He saw the dirty aluminum container of hot food, and he remembered the soft, calloused hand of Mrs. Miller resting on his torn grey jacket.

"Just eat, son," her voice echoed in his memory. "The sun will rise again tomorrow."
He swore to himself that when he returned to that market, he would bring the sun with him—or he would burn Vance’s empire to the ground trying.
