Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap

By the spring of the following year, the legal proceedings against Vance Financial had reached a boiling point in the State Supreme Court.
Silas Vance sat in his air-conditioned executive suite on the top floor of the Vance Tower, staring at a summons that had been served directly to his private residence at dawn. The summons accused his firm of systemic racketeering, fraudulent land foreclosures, and tax evasion exceeding eighty-five million dollars.
At the bottom of the complaint, listed as the lead special prosecutor appointed by the court board, was a name that made Silas’s blood run cold: Julian Vance.
Silas had spent millions trying to track down the boy he had ruined two years ago, assuming Julian was either dead in a ditch or rotting in a state penitentiary. Instead, Julian had spent a year gathering evidence under the protection of the State Attorney General’s special task force, mounting a legal strategy so airtight that every injunction Silas filed was shot down within hours.
The trial lasted three brutal months. Julian didn't yield an inch. In the courtroom, dressed in a sharp, dark suit, he dismantled Vance’s legal team with cold, surgical precision, presenting physical ledgers, decrypted server logs, and testimony from dozens of ruined farmers.

When the judge finally delivered the verdict, the forfeiture order was absolute: Vance Financial’s assets were frozen, its corporate license revoked, and Silas Vance was remanded into custody pending federal indictment. The court ordered immediate restitution for every property owner targeted by the firm over the past decade.
The legal battle was finished. The debt was paid in full.
