Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The grand foyer of the Sterling Manor did not echo with the warmth of a home; it reverberated with the cold, sterile acoustic of an elite mausoleum. Towering marble pillars of brilliant ivory supported a vaulted ceiling, from which hung a massive three-tier crystal chandelier casting warm, amber prisms across a polished floor so clean it mirrored every movement like liquid ice. Beyond the expansive glass double doors at the entrance, a storm was gathering over the estate's sprawling grounds, but inside, the air was warm, smelling faintly of imported white lilies and expensive floor wax.
In the center of this opulent expanse stood Victoria Sterling.
She was twenty-eight years old, slender and strikingly dangerous in her presence. Her dark brown hair was styled in a sharp, shoulder-length bob that framed a face built of sharp angles and pale skin. She wore a fitted black leather mini dress accented with bold, metallic gold shoulder pads that shimmered under the chandelier's glow. Thigh-high black leather boots hugged her legs, their heels making sharp, metallic cracks against the marble with every micro-adjustment of her posture.
In her right hand, Victoria clutched a heavy, polished black ebony cane fitted with a solid brass eagle-head handle.
At her feet was Leo. He was four years old, a frail boy wearing a tailored beige blazer, brown trousers, and polished brown leather shoes. His small face was flushed red, tears streaming down his chubby cheeks in hot, uninterrupted rivers as he sobbed hysterically.
Victoria did not look down at his face with pity. Her dark eyes were filled with an intense, calculated fury. She used the hook of the ebony cane to snag the lapel of Leo's beige blazer, pulling the child across the slippery white stone like a piece of unwanted luggage.
"Get up, Leo," Victoria commanded, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying hiss that cut through his crying. "Stop making that pathetic noise. You think your tears are going to save you from what you did?"
"Auntie... please! It hurts!" Leo choked out, his tiny hands clawing frantically at the smooth black wood of the cane as it dragged his collar tight against his throat. "I didn't open the door! I swear I didn't!"
"Liar!" Victoria snapped, her jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath her pale cheek. She hoisted the cane upward, leveraging the child's weight until he was forced to stand on his tiptoes to keep from choking. "You were in his study! You had the brass key in your pocket!"

"No! No!" Leo screamed, his small body shivering violently within his oversized blazer.
The sound of his screaming bounced off the high marble walls, shattering the quiet perfection of the manor. Victoria stepped closer, her thigh-high leather boots clicking sharply as she raised the cane higher, her hand tightening around the brass eagle handle until her knuckles turned stark white. She was not merely angry; she was terrified of what the boy had seen.
