THE HOUSE OF GLASS AND CANES / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - The Truth Unsealed

Richard inserted the tiny silver key into the hidden lock, turning it counterclockwise until a soft CLICK echoed from the wall.

A narrow panel in the bookshelf popped open, revealing a velvet-lined compartment no larger than a cigar box.

Inside lay a small, dark red leather book bound with an iron clasp.

Richard pulled the book out carefully, holding it in his hands as if it were made of spun glass. He walked back to the desk and laid it down in front of Detective Miller.

"This is Sarah's handwriting," Richard said, unlatching the iron clasp. "Every page is dated and signed."

Miller pulled a pair of thin latex gloves from his coat pocket, slipping them on before opening the dark red book.

He flipped through the initial pages, filled with neat, elegant cursive detailing minor art purchases, charitable donations, and personal gifts.

Then he stopped at a page dated three months before Sarah's death.

The handwriting on that page was jagged, pressed deep into the paper as if written with trembling, angry fingers.

"October 14th," Miller read aloud, his voice dropping into a low whisper. "Julian came to the house today while Richard was in London. He threatened to expose the family's off-shore tax accounts unless I assigned fifty percent of my voting shares in Sterling Enterprises to his shell company. He brought a vial of clear liquid. He told me if I didn't sign, Victoria would make sure I went to sleep and never woke up."

Miller looked up from the book, his eyes wide with shock. "She documented the extortion attempt..."

"Keep reading," Richard instructed quietly.

Miller turned the page.

"October 22nd. I have hidden the master shares in the vault at First National. I have instructed my attorney that if anything happens to me, my estate passes entirely to Leo, with Richard as sole trustee. Victoria thinks she is playing chess with Julian, but she is merely his butcher. May God forgive them both."

Miller closed the dark red book with a heavy SNAP.

"This isn't just evidence of financial fraud, Richard," Miller said, his voice trembling slightly. "This is a direct, contemporaneous record of premeditated murder and extortion. This completely guts Vance's defense."
