Chapter 10 - The Cryptic Legacy

The storm passed by dawn, leaving behind a sky the color of bruised slate and a damp, oppressive mist that hung low over the estate.

By 8:00 AM, the ravine was swarming with search and rescue teams, emergency vehicles, and federal agents. Yellow crime scene tape draped over the drenched foliage like bizarre party decorations.

Maya sat in the back of an ambulance, a thick orange thermal blanket wrapped around her shoulders. Lily was asleep on a gurney inside, monitored by a paramedic, soundly resting under a heavy sedative.

Julian stood near the bumper, a paper cup of untouched coffee in his hand, his eyes fixed on the muddy creek bed where dive teams were preparing to launch boats downstream. Clara was nowhere to be seen—federal agents had taken her into custody three hours earlier for her role in the initial offshore transfers.

Detective Marcus Vance walked over, his coat soaked through, smelling faintly of river mud and exhaust fumes.

"We found the car," Marcus said quietly, leaning against the ambulance door. "The one Eleanor mentioned. It was burned out in a quarry two miles downstream. Matches the dental records scheme she bragged about."

Maya looked up, her face pale, shadows dark beneath her eyes. "Did you find her body?"

Marcus shook his head. "Not yet. The river crests five miles down at the dam. If she swept down there, it could take days for the divers to clear the debris gates. But with a dress that heavy and a current that strong... survival odds are less than two percent."

"She isn't dead," Maya said flatly.

Julian looked down at his ex-wife. "Maya, you saw her fall into the rapids. She was sixty-eight years old. Nobody survives that creek in a flash flood."

"You don't understand," Maya said, her voice chillingly quiet. "She knew the storm was coming. She knew the river route. She told me to look at my phone right before she let go of that branch."

Marcus frowned, reaching into an evidence bag he carried. "Speaking of your phone... we retrieved it from the kitchen after the power was restored. Forensic technicians ran a dump on your digital footprint per your attorney's request."

He pulled out a printed sheet of paper and handed it to Maya.

Maya’s eyes scanned the black lines of text. It was an automated notification from her personal banking portal, timestamped at 4:12 AM—the exact moment the power had gone out in her house.

It wasn't an extraction of funds. It was a deposit.

Account Transfer Complete: $70,000,000.00 USD.

Sender: Vance Family Revocable Trust.

Recipient: Maya Vance (As Sole Guardian of Lily Vance).

Maya’s hands began to shake violently. "No... no, no, no."

"She didn't steal the money from Lily," Julian breathed, staring at the paper in horror. "She transferred the entire estate... into your name."

"Why?" Marcus asked, his sharp eyes narrowing as he looked between Julian and Maya. "Why would a woman who tried to ruin you leave you seventy million dollars?"

"Because she didn't leave me money," Maya whispered, tears of terror brimming in her eyes as the ultimate trap revealed itself. "She left me the evidence."
