Chapter 3 - The Broken Vow

A collective gasp ripped through the ballroom.
For three full seconds, nobody moved. Eleanor Vance, the undisputed matriarch of the city's high society, stood blind and suffocating under a thick mask of sweet, sticky lard-cream. Frosting dripped from her nose, landing with soft, heavy plops onto her chest.
"You... you lunatic!" Eleanor gasped, spitting cake crumbs from her lips as she blindly scraped at her eyes with her manicured nails. "Julian! Julian!"
From the edge of the head table, Julian Vance finally moved.
He was a tall man, sharply dressed in a bespoke black tuxedo, but his face had lost all color. For hours, Julian had been playing the role of the dutiful son and the triumphant groom, drinking scotch and accepting congratulations while quietly ignoring the psychological torture his mother was inflicting on his ex-wife and daughter. He had spent his entire life playing the bystander to Eleanor's cruelty, believing that neutrality was his shield.
Not anymore.
Julian didn't look at Clara, nor did he look at the cake-covered monster his mother had become. His eyes were locked on Lily, who was trembling against Maya’s knees.
He walked over, his heavy dress shoes crunching over the dried flower petals on the floor. He knelt down next to Maya, his posture breaking the illusion of perfection he had strived so hard to maintain.
"Julian!" Eleanor shrieked, wiping enough frosting from her eyes to reveal a face distorted by pure, unadulterated rage. "Look what she did to me! Look what your wife did! Call security! Have them arrested! Both of them!"
Julian ignored her. He reached out and gently picked Lily up into his arms, lifting the child against his chest. Lily buried her face into his shoulder, her tiny body shivering with spent adrenaline.
Julian stood up, facing his mother. His voice was not loud, but it possessed the cold, dead weight of an executioner's final sentence.
"You're finished, mom," Julian said.
Eleanor gasped, stepping backward. "What did you say to me?"
"I said you're finished," Julian repeated, his eyes burning with an anger that had been thirty years in the making. "The money, the trust, the manipulation. It ends tonight. In this room."
Before Eleanor could process the words, two heavy brass-bound doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.
Two uniformed police officers, flanked by the Astoria’s security detail, marched briskly down the central aisle. The heavy tread of their boots sounded like a countdown. The guests parted like the Red Sea, pulling back their designer gowns and tuxedos as the law stepped into the center of the family drama.
"Mrs. Eleanor Vance?" the lead officer asked, his hand resting casually near his utility belt.
"Thank God!" Eleanor squawked, gesturing frantically at Clara and Maya with her frosted hands. "Arrest them! The bride assaulted me! My ex-daughter-in-law trespassed! Get them out of here!"
The lead officer didn't look at Clara or Maya. He pulled a folded piece of paper from his inner jacket pocket and looked directly at Eleanor.
"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, wire fraud, and evidence tampering in relation to the Vance Trust Estate," the officer said calmly.
Eleanor froze, the frosting on her face beginning to crack as her expression shattered. "What... what did you say? This is a mistake! My lawyer is—"
"You have the right to remain silent," the second officer said, stepping behind her and grabbing her wrist—the same wrist Maya had held moments before.
"Get your hands off me!" Eleanor shrieked, thrashing against the officer's grip. "Let me go! Do you know who I am? Julian, tell them! Julian! You can't throw me out! This is MY venue! I paid for this!"
As the officers forced her arms behind her back, click-clacking the steel handcuffs into place over her beaded sleeves, Eleanor twisted her head, her white-smeared face looking like a nightmarish theater mask.
"You can't do this to me!" she screamed, her voice breaking into a jagged shriek that echoed off the high ceilings as they dragged her backward toward the exit. "You're nothing without me! None of you!"
May you like
The heavy doors clicked shut behind her, cutting off her screams mid-sentence.
The ballroom fell into a suffocating, dead silence.
