Chapter 7 - The Vanishing Act

The storm outside raged on, heavy rain pounding against the windowpanes of Maya's living room like a barrage of tiny fists. Inside, the silence was suffocating.
"Intercepted?" Maya repeated, the word tasting like copper on her tongue. "How could a police transport be intercepted? That requires military-grade timing!"
Julian looked at Clara with an intensity that made the bride shrink back into her oversized sweatshirt. "It requires someone on the inside knowing the exact route. The transfer route was changed twenty minutes before they left the precinct due to the rain. Only three people were given that updated route."
Clara shook her head frantically, backing away from the table until her hips hit the kitchen counter. "Julian, no! You can't think that I—"
"Who else, Clara?" Julian’s voice cracked with a terrifying mixture of rage and grief. "You lied about your past. You lied about your debts. You manipulated my mother into trust transfers, and then you played the hero by shoving a cupcake in her face to make sure she looked like a solitary lunatic!"
"I did it to survive!" Clara screamed, her composure entirely vanishing. "Your mother was going to destroy me! She was going to destroy all of us! You think she's a victim here? She planned this whole thing! She wanted to be arrested!"
Maya stepped between Julian and Clara, her hands raised to keep them apart. Her mind was racing, peeling back the layers of deception like a surgeon dissecting a tumor.
"Stop!" Maya commanded. "Both of you, shut up!"
They froze, looking at her.
"Think about it," Maya said, her eyes wide as the horrifying logic clicked into place. "Eleanor never loses control. She spends months, years, planning every single detail of her life. Do you really think she would let a five-year-old child, a ruined cupcake, and a public scene ruin her reputation unless she needed it to happen?"
Julian frowned. "What are you saying?"
"The ballroom was full of press, judges, and high-society witnesses," Maya explained, her voice trembling as the psychological puzzle assembled itself in her mind. "If Eleanor simply disappeared overnight, there would be a massive, immediate manhunt. Federal warrants, interpol red notices, global asset freezes. But if she is dramatically arrested in front of three hundred witnesses, framed as an aging, bitter matriarch who lost her sanity... the focus shifts."
"The focus shifts to the arrest," Julian realized, his face going completely white. "To the trial. To the legal chaos."
"And then," Maya continued, "she gets 'kidnapped' from a transport vehicle. The police think she’s been abducted or killed by offshore associates. She isn't a fugitive on the run; she’s a victim of a high-profile crime. It gives her complete, total dark cover to vanish with the seventy million dollars."
Clara stared at Maya in terror. "She... she orchestrated her own arrest?"
"She provoked me," Maya whispered, remembering the cold, dead look in Eleanor's eyes right before she knocked the cupcake to the floor. "She pushed Lily. She knew I would react. She knew Clara would break under pressure. She used our trauma against us to trigger the exact sequence of events she needed."
Suddenly, the power in the house cut out.

The ambient lights extinguished instantly, plunging the kitchen into pitch-black darkness. The steady hum of the refrigerator ceased, leaving only the deafening roar of the storm outside.
Above them, in Lily's bedroom, a floorboard creaked.
