Chapter 13 - The Burning of the Ledger

Twenty minutes later, the dark sky above Blackwood Point turned a violent, screaming orange.

Daniel stood on the gravel shoulder of the mountain pass, holding Maya wrapped tightly in her heavy wool blanket against his shoulder.

Down in the ravine, the squat concrete building with the red door was engulfed in a roaring column of fire.

The thermite charges Victoria had wired into the central server room to destroy the evidence had been triggered when Daniel severed the main power lines on his way out. The white marble corridors, the glass observation room, the clinical logbooks, and the IV bags were being consumed by a two-thousand-degree furnace of white heat that melted the concrete walls into slag.

A single grey sedan sat idling on the lower gravel pad—the car Victoria’s private security team had used.

Victoria herself was gone. Whether she had escaped the flames through a secondary emergency hatch or had been swallowed by her own chemical furnace remained a secret buried beneath fifty tons of collapsed granite.

Daniel did not care.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, brushed-steel flash drive—the drive containing the master employee roster, the corporate funding streams, and the trial records of Vance Pharmacological.

He looked at the tiny piece of steel sitting in his palm.

He walked to the edge of the cliff overlook—the exact spot where Clara’s car had crossed the line fourteen months ago—and threw the drive out into the dark void.

The tiny piece of metal spun through the freezing night air, falling two hundred feet down into the roaring, black waters of the Atlantic Ocean, vanishing forever into the deep, churning surf.

"Is Mommy down there?" Maya asked softly, her small head resting on his shoulder as she watched the embers float up into the fog.

Daniel looked down at the dark water, then up at the pale stars beginning to break through the cloud cover above the mountains.

"No, sweetheart," Daniel whispered, his voice steady, warm, and clear. "Mommy isn't down there. She’s far away from this place."
