Chapter 7 - The Highway to Blackwood

Daniel didn't reply. He dropped the radio onto the floor, crushed it beneath his heavy boot heel, and ran out of the study toward his daughter’s room.

He unlocked the door with hands slick with blood.

Maya was awake, sitting in the middle of her bed, her small hands clutching her feather duvet against her chin, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at the blood on her father's face.

"Daddy?" she whimpered.

"Put your shoes on, baby," Daniel said, forcing his voice into a terrifyingly soft, calm cadence as he picked her up in his arms, wrapping her in a heavy wool blanket. "We're going for a ride."

"Is the lady coming back?" Maya cried, burying her face into his neck.

"No," Daniel whispered, his eyes hardening into flint as he carried her down the back service stairs toward the underground garage. "She isn't coming back."

Three minutes later, Daniel’s black SUV tore out of the Meridian Estate’s rear gate, its heavy tires chewing through the gravel driveway before slamming onto the wet asphalt of the mountain highway.

The fog was so thick it looked like wet cotton pressed against the windshield. The wipers slapped back and forth in a hypnotic, rhythmic beat—SWISH, CLICK. SWISH, CLICK.

Daniel set Maya in the front passenger seat, pulling the heavy seatbelt tight around her blanketed frame. Beside her, on the center console, lay the suppressed 9mm pistol he had taken from the gunman in his study, alongside the crumpled scrap of paper containing the three numbers: 4-1-9 RED DOOR.

The Red Door facility sat five miles up the winding mountain pass, built into the rocky cliffs above Blackwood Point—the exact spot where Clara’s car had plunged two hundred feet into the rocky surf below.

Daniel kept his left hand on the steering wheel, his right hand resting on his daughter’s knee.

"Maya," he said softly, keeping his eyes locked on the white fog line of the road. "When you saw the long silver key in the study... did you see where Victoria took it from?"

Maya nodded slowly, her thumb tucked into her mouth. "From... from her coat pocket. The pink one she wore on Tuesday."

"Was there anything else in the pocket, baby?"

Maya reached into her lavender dress pocket and pulled out a tiny, square metallic object she had been hiding all evening.

It was a small, high-density flash drive encased in brushed steel, engraved with a single corporate logo: VANCE PHARMACOLOGICAL – ASSET ARCHIVE.

Daniel looked at the tiny drive in his daughter’s hand.

He realized then that Victoria hadn't just been targeting Clara. She was executing a systematic purge of the entire Vance family estate, liquidating the clinical testing records of a black-market pharmaceutical trial that had used his wife as an unwitting human test subject.

And Maya wasn't just a witness.

She was the key to the vault.
