Chapter 8 - The Red Door

The facility did not look like a medical facility; it looked like an abandoned hydroelectric pumping station from the 1970s.
It sat wedged between two jagged granite cliffs overlooking the roaring, black waters of the ocean below. A rusted chain-link fence surrounded the perimeter, topped with razor wire that hummed faintly with high-voltage electricity. In the center of the gravel yard stood a squat, windowless concrete structure painted a dull, industrial gray.
The front entry was a single, heavy steel fire door painted a deep, weathered crimson.
The Red Door.
Daniel parked his SUV two hundred yards down the access road, hidden behind a clump of dry pine trees. He turned off the headlights, leaving the vehicle idling quietly in the fog.
He turned to Maya.
"I need you to stay right here in the seat, sweetheart," Daniel said, reaching over to turn on the heater, setting the air to blow low and warm against her feet. "Lock the doors from the inside. Do not open them for anyone except me. Do you understand?"
"Daddy, don't go," Maya wept, her fingers clutching his torn blue sleeve. "The red door is where the bad dreams live."
Daniel leaned over and kissed her forehead, holding her face between his palms. "The bad dreams are ending tonight, Maya. I promise you."
He slipped the suppressed pistol into his jacket pocket, took the brushed-steel flash drive from her hand, and stepped out into the freezing mountain mist.
He locked the SUV doors with his key fob, watched the yellow hazard lights flash once, and walked toward the crimson door.
The wind coming off the cliff smelled of salt, wet granite, and ozone.
As Daniel reached the concrete apron outside the red door, he saw that the heavy steel frame was slightly ajar—a two-inch crack of harsh, fluorescent white light spilling out onto the wet gravel floor.
He pulled the pistol from his pocket, disengaged the safety with a quiet click of his thumb, and pushed the crimson door open with his boot heel.

The interior was a long, clinical hallway of pure white marble.
It was an exact, identical replica of the corridor at the Meridian Estate.
