THE MASK OF BLOOD AND SILK / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the 4th Floor

Before the shock of Sterling’s revelation could fully settle over the room, the emergency elevator doors at the back of the lobby opened with a low, mechanical moan.

A young nurse, her blue scrubs spotted with blood, stumbled out of the elevator. Her face was pale with panic as she looked around the hyper-tensioned room, her eyes landing frantically on Julian.

"Julian!" she cried out, ignoring the men in suits and the fallen manager on the floor. "It’s Clara! Her vitals are collapsing! The life-support monitors on Floor 4 are failing!"

Julian’s heart skipped a beat. The anger consuming him vanished instantly, replaced by sheer terror. "What do you mean failing? The primary backup generators should have engaged!"

"Someone overridden the power routing to Bed 402!" the nurse shouted, her voice trembling. "Her oxygen pumps are running on internal battery backup—she has less than ten minutes before the system completely shuts down!"

Marcus, still sprawled against the marble pillar, let out a raspy, hysterical laugh. "You thought... you thought I was the only one playing this game, Julian? You think I operated alone?"

Julian whirled around, grabbing Marcus by his gold tie and yanking him up until their faces were inches apart. "What did you do to her?!"

"I didn't do anything tonight," Marcus sneered, a sickly, desperate triumph shining in his eyes. "But the partners... the people who really run the Vance Syndicate... they knew Sterling was looking for an heir. They knew about his secret test. If you pass the test, Julian, they lose control of the hospital network! They can't let you take the chair. If Clara dies tonight, you'll be too broken to fight them!"

"Who are they, Marcus?!" Arthur demanded, stepping forward and seizing his twin by the collar.

"It doesn't matter!" Marcus laughed maniacally. "The automated override is locked in the main server room on Floor 4! And the only keycode that can reset it is inside the head of the chief medical officer—Dr. Victor Croft!"

Julian dropped Marcus like a piece of trash. "Croft... he's in the ICU right now."

Without waiting for another word, Julian turned and sprinted toward the open elevator.

"Julian, wait!" Sterling called out, his authoritative voice echoing through the atrium. He turned to his lead security commander. "Commander Vance, lock down all exits. No one leaves this building. Get the medical trauma team up to Bed 402 immediately!"

Julian slammed his hand against the elevator door button, but before the doors could close, Arthur Vance slid into the cabin beside him, his face set in grim determination.

"I spent ten years running from our family's sins, nephew," Arthur said as the elevator surged upward, the digital display rapidly counting up from Floor 1 to Floor 4. "I won't let them kill Clara to protect their dark secrets. We fight together."

The elevator hummed as it climbed through the metallic shaft of the hospital. Outside the glass back of the elevator car, the city skyline flickered in the storm, but inside, the air was suffocatingly thin. Julian looked at his reflection in the polished steel doors. He was no longer just a desperate desk clerk trying to pay his bills. He was entering a battlefield where the weapons were not scalpels, but sabotage, greed, and cold-blooded murder.

The bell chimed. FLOOR 4.

The doors slid open to reveal a hallway bathed not in the sterile white light of a healing facility, but in the flashing red glow of emergency alarms. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and burning insulation. And standing at the end of the dimly lit corridor, holding a digital override tablet in his gloved hands, was Dr. Victor Croft.
