Chapter 8 - The Crucible of Blood

"No!" Julian roared.

He did not think. He did not calculate the risks. He launched himself forward with terrifying speed, driving his shoulder directly into Dr. Croft's chest. The sudden impact slammed the surgeon against the hard reinforced wall, sending the digital override tablet flying through the air.

left the ground, spinning through the red-lit darkness before crashing down onto the slick floor several yards away.

Arthur Vance lunged for the tablet, sliding across the floor to grab it, but Croft reacted with shocking, lethal agility. Reaching beneath his surgical coat, Croft drew a concealed silver scalpel—a custom titanium blade designed for micro-dissection, sharp enough to sever hair in mid-air. With a swift, practiced stroke, Croft slashed downward.

Arthur gasped as the blade sliced through his suit jacket and across his forearm, leaving a deep, bleeding wound. He lost his grip on the tablet, which skidded further down the hall toward the open elevator shaft.

Julian tackled Croft from behind, wrapping his arms around the doctor's neck in a chokehold. "Give me the override code! Give it to me!"

Croft slammed his head backward, his skull striking Julian’s nose with a sickening crunch. Pain exploded behind Julian’s eyes, and the metallic taste of his own blood filled his mouth. He staggered back, clutching his broken nose, but refused to fall.

Croft turned, his face contorted into a mask of cold, predatory fury. "You have your father’s stupidity, boy! You think love and honor mean something in a world built on iron and gold?!"

Croft lunged with the scalpel, aiming directly for Julian’s throat. Julian instinctively threw his left hand up to block. The razor-sharp blade drove deep into the palm of Julian's left hand, piercing straight through the tissue between his fingers.

Julian screamed in agony, but instead of retreating, he used the horrific injury to lock Croft’s weapon hand in place. Gritting his teeth through the blinding agony, Julian grabbed Croft’s wrist with his right hand, twisting it violently downward with all his remaining strength.

SNAP.

Croft let out a strangled shriek as his wrist fractured beneath the leverage. The blood-stained scalpel clattered to the floor.

Julian slammed his knee hard into Croft’s stomach, driving the air out of the doctor's lungs, then threw a heavy right hook that caught Croft flush on the jaw. The surgeon collapsed onto the floor, unconscious, his spectacles crushing under his own weight.

Breathing heavily, blood dripping from his face and streaming down his left arm, Julian turned toward Room 402.

Arthur was already at the door, clutching his bleeding arm with one hand while holding the retrieved tablet in the other. His fingers were flying across the touchscreen, trying to bypass the encryption lock.

"I can't break the code!" Arthur yelled frantically over the sound of the blaring alarm. "It’s a thirty-two-character biometric sequence! It needs Croft’s fingerprint and facial scan!"

Julian stumbled over to the fallen surgeon, grabbed Croft by the lapels of his coat, and dragged his limp body across the floor to the door of Room 402. Dragging the man's heavy weight with one injured hand, Julian pressed Croft's thumb hard against the tablet's glass scanner, then held the screen up to the unconscious doctor’s face.

The screen flashed from red to brilliant green.

BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE CONFIRMED.

POWER RESTORED TO POD 402.

Inside the room, the mechanical hum of the life-support systems roared back to life. The flatline alarm cut out, replaced by the steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of Clara’s heart monitor.

Julian slumped against the glass window of his sister's room, sliding down to the floor as his blood smeared across the glass. He watched her chest rise and fall beneath the crisp white sheets. She was breathing. She was alive.

From the end of the hall, the heavy boots of Sterling’s security team thundered up the stairs, followed closely by Alexander Sterling himself. The reclusive billionaire stepped over the unconscious doctor, his grey eyes surveying the bloody scene with profound, solemn gravity.

Sterling walked over to where Julian sat exhausted against the glass. He looked down at the young man’s bleeding hands, then reached into his pocket and pulled out a clean silk handkerchief, extending it toward Julian.

"You fought like a lion to save her," Sterling said softly. "Your father would be immensely proud."

Julian looked up through blurred vision, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "She... she isn't in a coma, Lord Sterling. Croft... he used her. She has the matrix inside her."

Sterling’s expression turned dark as iron. He looked at Arthur, then back down at Julian. "I know. And that is precisely why this night is far from over."
