Chapter 9 - The Genesis Protocol

The private surgical suite on the top floor of St. Jude's had been completely isolated from the rest of the hospital. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the storm was beginning to clear, leaving behind a cold twilight illuminated by the pale pink light of dawn.

Inside the suite, three high-level medical specialists—personally brought in by Alexander Sterling via private helicopter—worked with quiet, frantic speed around Clara’s bed. Monitored screens lined the room, displaying complex molecular strings and real-time brainwave activity that looked drastically different from any normal patient.

Julian sat in a leather chair in the corner of the room, his left hand heavily bandaged and his nose set in a clean splint. Beside him stood Arthur Vance, his arm wrapped in a sling, staring down at the glowing monitors.

Alexander Sterling walked into the room, abandoning his ragged disguise entirely. He was now dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that reflected his true status as one of the most powerful men on the planet. He held a crystal glass of water, which he handed gently to Julian.

"Drink," Sterling commanded softly. "You look as though you've stepped out of a war zone."

Julian took a small sip, his eyes never leaving Clara's pale face. "Explain it to me, Lord Sterling. No more riddles. No more tests. What is the matrix inside my sister?"

Sterling leaned against the edge of a steel desk, gazing out at the rising sun. "Twenty years ago, your father and I realized that human organ failure was not a biological inevitability, but a systemic software error in our DNA. Together, we created the Genesis Protocol—a microscopic cellular matrix capable of rewriting damaged tissue in real time. It was designed to cure heart disease, kidney failure, and traumatic brain injury."

"If it worked, why was it hidden?" Julian asked.

"Because the board of directors of our parent company—a cabal of international medical conglomerates led secretly by Dr. Croft and your uncle Marcus—realized it would destroy their business model," Arthur answered, his voice bitter. "They didn't just want to hide it, Julian. They wanted to weaponize it. They wanted to sell the treatment exclusively to the ultra-wealthy for tens of millions of dollars per dose."

Sterling nodded slowly. "Your father refused to hand over the source code. So, Croft engineered an 'accident.' They poisoned your family's residence with a rare neurotoxin. Your mother died instantly. Clara, who was only fourteen at the time, absorbed a lethal dose. But your father, in a desperate attempt to save her life, injected her with the only existing strain of the live Genesis Matrix."

Julian’s breath hitched. He set the water glass down, his hands trembling slightly despite the pain medication. "So she didn't fall ill... her body was fighting to process the matrix."

"Precisely," Sterling said. "Her immune system integrated with the artificial cells over three years. Clara is not sick, Julian. She is the living source code of the cure. The reason Croft kept her alive in this ICU was to harvest the replicated cells from her spinal fluid every six months. He was selling those harvests on the black market to private buyers overseas for fifty million dollars a batch."

The sheer atrocity of the truth hit Julian like a physical blow. The hospital he had worked for, the bills he had bled to pay, the manager he had served—it was all an elaborate farm designed to drain his sister’s body of life while charging him for the privilege of keeping her captive.

"Where is Marcus?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to an icy, lethal whisper.

"In the sub-basement detention holding, under guard," Arthur replied. "Along with Croft. They are waiting for federal authorities to arrive. But there is a complication, Julian."

Sterling pulled a secure digital drive from his pocket and set it on the table between them. "Croft managed to send an encrypted data burst to his buyers in Zurich three minutes before you tackled him. They know Clara’s true status. And right now, a private mercenary asset group funded by the Zurich Syndicate is en route to this facility to retrieve her by force."

Julian stood up slowly, ignoring the sharp pain radiating through his body. He looked at Sterling, then at his uncle Arthur, his eyes burning with an unshakeable resolve.

"They took my father," Julian said quietly. "They stole my youth, and they turned my sister into a prisoner. They are not taking her out of this building."
