Chapter 11 - The Blood on the Highway

Clara sat frozen in the booth, her hand covering her mouth as tears poured silently down her face. The horror, the tragedy, and the profound, incredible mercy of the big man's confession crashed over her like a tidal wave, drowning out every doubt, every fear, and every shred of suspicion.

"Silas..." she choked out, reading the name embroidered in faded red thread on the breast pocket of his leather vest.

"Take your coat, Clara," Silas said, stepping back from the table. "Take your picture. Go to the hospital in the city. The number on that paper belongs to Dr. Aris Thorne—he's the head of pediatric neurology at St. Jude's. He was my daughter's doctor. I called him twenty minutes ago from the payphone outside. He’s waiting for you."

Clara stood up from the vinyl booth. She didn't look at the money; she looked at Silas.

Without a second thought, she threw her arms around his waist, burying her wet face into his heavy leather vest. She held him with all the frantic, desperate strength left in her fragile body, her tears soaking through his flannel shirt.

"Thank you," she sobbed, her voice raw and broken against his chest. "Thank you... thank you... thank you..."

Silas stood still for a moment, his broad frame unaccustomed to being held with love rather than fear. Slowly, gently, he raised his massive, tattooed arm and wrapped it around her shoulders, resting his hand against her wet red hair for three quiet seconds.

"Go save your girl," Silas murmured into her hair.

He pulled back gently, stepping away from her arms. He turned toward the door, his heavy boots moving with a light, purposeful stride that he hadn't possessed in eleven long years.

"Silas! Wait!" Clara called out, grabbing the yellow package from the table, holding it tight against her chest. "Will I ever see you again? How can I find you?"

Silas paused at the glass exit door, his hand resting on the brass handle. He looked back over his shoulder, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through his dark beard.

"You won't need to find me, Clara," Silas said softly. "Just make sure she gets to wear that yellow sundress again."

He pushed open the door and stepped out into the rain.
