Chapter 14 - The Whispering Sun

Lily’s eyelids fluttered softly.
Slowly, deliberately, the four-year-old girl opened her eyes. The deep, pale blue iris shone with a faint, returning clarity beneath the bright morning light streaming through the window. She looked up at Clara, her tiny fingers twitching inside her mother’s grip.
"Mommy?" Lily’s voice was a faint, raspy squeak, barely louder than a breath.
"I'm here, baby," Clara sobbed, smiling through her tears as she kissed Lily’s forehead over and over again. "Mommy’s right here. You're safe."
Lily looked around the bright, warm room, then back up at her mother’s face. "Is it... is it raining outside?"
Clara turned her head toward the grand glass window of the hospital room.
Outside, the heavy dark clouds of the night storm had broken apart, rolling away toward the eastern horizon. The rising sun was bursting through the gaps in the mountain ridge, casting long, brilliant rays of golden light across the city skyscrapers, melting the frost on the windowpanes into sparkling drops of dew.
"No, sweetie," Clara said softly, turning back to her daughter with a smile that lit up her entire face. "The rain is all gone. The sun is coming up."
Lily let out a small, tired sigh of contentment, her little fingers wrapping tightly around Clara’s thumb. "Where’s my swing, Mommy? Can we go to the park?"
Clara laughed—a beautiful, ringing sound that hadn't echoed in her life for five nightmare months. "Yes, baby. As soon as you're strong enough, we're going to the park. And we're going to wear your yellow sundress."

Lily smiled—a small, toothy grin that showed her missing incisor—before closing her eyes and falling into a deep, peaceful, natural sleep.
Clara sat by the bed, holding her daughter’s hand, watching the golden sunlight fill every corner of the room.
