Chapter 11 - The Echo in the Code

Two years later, the silence of the Vance estate was broken by an unexpected digital ghost.

It was a cold November afternoon. Snow was falling gently over the lake, coating the high oak trees in a quiet, white blanket.

Evelyn was in her private home office on the second floor, working on an international acquisition deal. Her dual monitors displayed real-time stock indexes from London and Tokyo.

Suddenly, her primary monitor flickered. The financial charts vanished, replaced by a plain black terminal window with a blinking green cursor.

A single line of text automated across the screen:

> UNENCRYPTED BACKUP DETECTED: SERVER_ZURICH_NODE_09

Evelyn stopped typing. Her fingers hovered over her mechanical keyboard.

She hadn't accessed the Zurich node in over twenty-four months. It was the secure server she had used to store the financial records detailing her brothers' offshore accounts—the server she had used to feed anonymous tips to the IRS during the trial.

A second line of text appeared:

> FILE EXTRACTED: REVERSE_ANGLE_REC_0542PM.RAW

> SENDER: UNKNOWN_IP [ROUTED VIA TOR]

> MESSAGE: "THE ILLUSION HAS A SECOND COPY. $20 MILLION BY MIDNIGHT, OR THE D.A. RECEIVES THE RAW FILE."

Evelyn leaned back in her leather executive chair. Her heart did not race. Her hands did not shake. She had lived in the high-stakes chess match of survival for so long that extortion felt less like a threat and more like a familiar, predictable opponent.

She opened an encrypted messaging app on her secondary phone and dialed a private, unlisted number in Frankfurt.

"Speak," a low, raspy male voice answered on the second ring.

"Target identified as Node 09," Evelyn said flatly. "Someone bought the Zurich server backup from the liquidation auction of Julian's shell company."

"Do you want it erased?" the voice asked.

"No," Evelyn said, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the green blinking cursor on her screen. "I want to know who bought it. And I want them brought to the estate before the midnight deadline."
