Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Patriarch

The next morning at 8:00 AM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Vance Tower in downtown Chicago was surrounded by news vans, satellite trucks, and swarms of reporters.
The headlines across every major financial network were screaming the same story:
VANCE BROTHERS ARRESTED IN ATTEMPTED MURDER PLOT; HEIRESS ASSUMES CONTROL OF MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR EMPIRE.
Inside the executive suite on the 40th floor, the atmosphere was as tense as a war room.
The fourteen members of the board of directors sat around a massive oval table made of dark Italian marble. At the head of the table sat Evelyn Vance.
She was dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray Alexander McQueen suit, her hair styled into a slick, high bun. Her skin was pale, but her presence was commanding, absolute, and terrifyingly calm. On her left sat Arthur Pendelton—who had swiftly switched sides the moment the police reports were finalized—and on her right sat her father’s personal physician, Dr. Harold Vance (no relation), holding a thick medical portfolio.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Evelyn began, her voice carrying effortlessly through the room via the conference microphone. "As you are all aware from the morning news, Julian, Marcus, and Victor Vance are currently in federal custody facing severe criminal indictments."
A chorus of anxious murmurs ran through the board members.
"However," Evelyn continued, raising a hand to quiet the room, "the continuity of this company remains entirely secure. My father, Arthur Vance, established a secondary trust protocol in 2019 that activates automatically in the event of criminal indictment of the primary trustees."
She gestured to Dr. Harold, who opened the medical portfolio and laid several documents on the table.
"Furthermore," Evelyn said, looking around the room, "I am pleased to inform you that my father’s medical condition has shown significant, unexpected stabilization over the last forty-eight hours."
The board members froze.
"Stabilization?" asked Thomas Sterling, the oldest board member and a long-time ally of Julian. "Evelyn... your father has been in a vegetative state for eight months following his stroke."
"He was in a medically induced coma, Thomas," Evelyn corrected smoothly, a thin, mysterious smile touching her lips. "Administered and maintained by a medical team selected personally by Julian."
The room fell into an absolute, stunned silence.
"Dr. Harold," Evelyn said, turning to the physician. "Would you care to read the toxicological findings from my father’s blood work drawn at 6:00 AM this morning?"
Dr. Harold cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. "Upon taking over Mr. Vance's care from the previous attending team at midnight, we conducted a comprehensive neuro-toxicology screen. We discovered trace levels of a synthetic GABA-inhibitor—a compound designed to suppress brainwave activity and mimic brain death without causing permanent cardiac arrest."
A collective gasp echoed across the boardroom.
"Julian wasn't waiting for my father to die," Evelyn said, her voice turning into hard steel. "He was keeping him artificially unconscious until the proxy transfer was legally binding. Now that my father’s medication has been flushed from his system... he is awake. And he has already signed the revocation of all authority previously granted to my brothers."
Thomas Sterling sank back into his leather chair, his face pale, his hands trembling. "My God..."
"The board vote is no longer necessary, gentlemen," Evelyn said, standing up and buttoning her suit jacket. "The empire has returned to its rightful owner. Good morning."
She walked out of the boardroom, her heels clicking a sharp, victorious rhythm on the marble floor, leaving the board of directors in total, shattered silence.
As she stepped into her private office, her assistant closed the heavy double doors behind her.
Sitting in a high-backed leather chair near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan was an old man. He had silver hair, a thin, weathered face, and sharp, dark eyes. He was wearing a dark blue hospital robe, an IV line taped to his hand, but his posture was completely erect.
Arthur Vance—the ruthless patriarch who had built Vance Enterprises out of blood, land grabs, and corporate warfare—looked up at his daughter.
"Did they buy it?" the old man rasped, his voice deep, dry, and terrifying.
Evelyn walked over to his chair, reaching out to gently adjust the collar of his robe.
"They bought every word, Father," she said softly. "Julian and Marcus will spend the rest of their lives in federal prison for attempted murder and illegal medical confinement."
Arthur Vance chuckled—a cold, dry, wheezing sound that held no warmth.

"You did well, Evelyn," the old man said, looking out at the city below them. "You used their own greed against them. Just like I taught you."
"No, Father," Evelyn whispered, looking at her reflection in the glass beside his. "I did it better than you ever could. You built an empire on fear. I built mine on an illusion."
