Chapter 5 - The Anatomy of a Frame

The front doors of the Vance estate were breached at 6:34 PM.

Detective Sarah Miller of the CPD Financial and Special Crimes Division stepped into the grand foyer. She was forty-five, wearing a sharp gray trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a tight ponytail. Behind her were four uniformed officers and two crime scene technicians carrying black equipment cases.

She stopped at the edge of the foyer, her eyes scanning the scene: the broken bronze lamp, the dried pool of blood near the base of the stairs, the blue and purple balloons floating near the ceiling, and the shattered crystal glass still crunching underfoot.

"Quite a party," Miller said dryly, stepping around the bloodstain.

Arthur Pendelton rushed down the stairs to meet her, his hands raised in a gestures of professional deference. "Detective Miller, thank you for coming so quickly. I am Arthur Pendelton, lead counsel for Vance Enterprises. There has been a terrible domestic accident—"

"Save it, Arthur," Miller interrupted, pulling a small notebook from her pocket. "I know who you are, and I know who owns this house. Where is Mrs. Vance?"

"She is upstairs being attended to by our private physician—"

"I asked for Mrs. Vance, not your hired doctor," Miller snapped. She turned to the two uniformed officers behind her. "Secure the perimeter. Nobody enters or leaves without my explicit authorization. Where are the brothers?"

"In the study, Detective," a soft voice spoke up.

Detective Miller looked up. Evelyn Vance was leaning against the mahogany balustrade at the top of the stairs. She looked fragile, pale, wrapped in her black cashmere robe, her hand resting over her abdomen.

"Mrs. Vance," Miller said, her tone softening slightly as she walked up the first few steps. "Are you injured? Do you need medical transport?"

"I need to speak to you privately, Detective," Evelyn said, her voice trembling slightly. "Before my husband's lawyers alter the security tapes."

"The security system was turned off at 4:00 PM for the baby shower," Pendelton interjected quickly, stepping between Miller and the stairs. "It’s standard protocol during private family events—"

"The house system was off," Evelyn said, looking down at Pendelton with a cold gaze. "But the hidden nanny-cam in the third-floor library archway wasn't."

Pendelton’s jaw tightened. He shot a frantic glance toward the study door down the hall.

Detective Miller saw the glance. She didn't miss a single beat. "Officer Hayes, step into the study and invite Mr. Julian, Marcus, and Victor Vance to join us in the foyer. Make sure their hands stay where you can see them."

"Detective, this is an outrage!" Pendelton protested. "My clients have not been charged with any crime!"

"They haven't been charged yet," Miller said, stepping past him to reach Evelyn at the top of the stairs. She looked at the cut on Evelyn’s hairline, then down at her black robe. "Mrs. Vance, where is the child?"

"He's upstairs," Evelyn whispered. "Leo has the footage. He locked himself in the nursery because Julian threatened to break his arm if he didn't hand over the phone."

Miller’s face turned to stone. She turned around on the landing, looking down at the foyer as the study door swung open.

Julian, Marcus, and Victor walked out, flanked by Officer Hayes. Julian was holding a blood-soaked handkerchief to his ruined nose. His eyes were wild, darting toward the front doors, then toward Evelyn, then toward the detective.

"Detective Miller," Marcus said smoothly, adopting his best boardroom manner. "I assure you this is a massive misunderstanding. My sister-in-law has been suffering from severe prenatal psychosis. She has been seeing specialists in New York for the past three months—"

"I don't care about her medical history right now, Mr. Vance," Miller said calmly. "I care about the eight-year-old child currently locked in a nursery because your brother threatened him."

"That's a fabrication!" Julian shouted through his tissue, his voice nasal and distorted. "The brat stole my property! He was filming inside my private residence without consent!"

"He was filming a crime, Julian," Evelyn said from the top of the stairs. She slowly unbuttoned the top of her black cashmere robe, allowing it to slide off her shoulders slightly.

Beneath the robe, she was wearing a thin grey silk camisole.

Across her neck, shoulders, and chest were dark, brutal bruises—perfect outlines of fingers, handprints, and deep purple welts that looked like the result of a violent, prolonged physical assault.

The room gasped. Even Pendelton took a step back, his eyes wide with genuine shock.

"They did this to me in the library before the guests arrived," Evelyn wept, her voice breaking, echoing through the high foyer. "They told me if I didn't sign the proxy, they would make sure my baby died inside me. And when I ran to the stairs... Richard held me while Julian pushed."

Marcus stared at the bruises on her neck, his mind racing, trying to figure out how she had faked marks that looked so fresh, so brutal, so real.

"She's lying..." Marcus whispered, his voice failing him for the first time in his life. "She's... she's a monster."

"Detective," Evelyn said, looking down at Miller with tears streaming down her face. "Search the wall safe in Julian's study. The phone is in there. And on that phone, you will find the video of them trying to kill me."
