Chapter 10 - THE LAST AUDIT

The silence in the Mayflower Grand Ballroom was total, broken only by the hum of the LED screens continuously broadcasting Marcus’s illegal financial ledgers to the world. Five hundred of the most powerful people on earth stood frozen, watching a corporate titan crumble in real-time.
Marcus backed away from the lectern, his hands trembling violently. The suave, invincible executive had vanished, leaving behind a terrified, cornered man whose entire life had been constructed on a foundation of lies.
"This is a hoax!" Marcus shouted, pointing a shaky finger at Eleanor as she reached the foot of the stage. "She's unstable! Security! Remove this woman!"
None of the hotel security guards moved. Instead, Thomas Vance stepped onto the stage from the side wing, flanked by six heavily armed FBI tactical agents wearing black body armor with FBI blazoned in yellow across their chests.
"Stand down, Marcus," Thomas said, pulling a silver pair of handcuffs from his belt. "It's over."
"Thomas?" Marcus stared at his brother in utter disbelief. "You... you're helping her?"
"I'm executing a federal arrest warrant, brother," Thomas replied coldly. "You are charged with wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and high treason. You have the right to remain silent."
Marcus looked around the room—at the cameras flashing incessantly, at the foreign diplomats staring at him with disgust, at the glowing screens displaying his secret offshore empire, and finally at Eleanor, who stood at the base of the stage, her blue eyes cold and unyielding.
A sudden, desperate madness flared in Marcus’s eyes. He lunged toward his cashmere topcoat resting on a chair behind the podium, reaching into the interior pocket for a small, concealed automatic pistol.
"Marcus, don't!" Thomas yelled.
THWIP! THWIP!
Two silenced shots echoed through the hall as an FBI sniper positioned on the upper balcony fired!
The rounds struck Marcus in the right shoulder and thigh. He collapsed heavily onto the wooden stage, screaming in pain, his pistol skittering across the floor and tumbling off the edge, landing right at Eleanor’s feet.
Eleanor didn't flinch. She didn't step back. She looked down at the gun, then up at her bleeding husband squirming on the stage above her.
Thomas stepped forward, kicking the gun away and pinning Marcus to the floor, snapping the silver handcuffs tightly around his wrists.
"Why...?" Marcus wheezed, blood soaking through his velvet dinner jacket, his eyes fixed on Eleanor. "I built... an empire for us, Eleanor... Everything I did... was for power..."
Eleanor leaned over the stage, looking directly into his tear-filled, pain-racked eyes.
She reached up to her left lapel. She unpinned the silver feather brooch—the piece that had cost six years of her sister's life, the piece that had almost destroyed her nephew, the piece that had finally brought an empire down.
She dropped the silver feather onto Marcus’s chest, right over his bleeding wound.

"Your risk assessment was flawed, Marcus," Eleanor whispered, her voice dropping into a final, lethal whisper. "You forgot to account for the family you betrayed."
She turned on her heel and walked away down the central aisle, not looking back once as the federal agents dragged Marcus Vance out of the Mayflower Hotel in chains, into the cold, waiting darkness of the city streets.
