Chapter 7 - THE COLD ATLANTIC

The shock of the freezing Atlantic water hit Eleanor like a physical blow, knocking the breath from her lungs. She sank three feet into the black, churning tide beneath the burning boathouse before her instincts kicked in. She kicked off her heavy leather heels, kicked frantically with her legs, and broke the surface of the water, gasping for air.

Above her, the boathouse was a roaring mountain of orange and white flame. Heat radiated down onto the cold water, turning the rain into stinging steam.

"Sophia! Leo!" Eleanor shouted, wiping salt water from her eyes.

Ten feet away, clinging to a slimy wooden support pylon beneath the burning dock, was Sophia, holding Leo securely above the waves. The boy was shivering violently, his teeth chattering, but his eyes were wide and focused.

"Over here!" Sophia yelled over the roar of the flames and the crashing surf. "The tide is pulling out toward the bay!"

"Hold on to the pylon!" Eleanor swam through the dark, choppy water, reaching the support timber and grabbing a rusted iron rung embedded in the wood.

High above them, through the gaps in the burning deck planks, she saw the silhouette of Marcus standing near his armored SUV at the top of the ridge. He was watching the fire through a pair of night-vision binoculars, waiting to verify the total destruction of his past. He couldn't see them—the thick smoke pouring off the burning oil on the water’s surface created a pitch-black shadow beneath the stilts.

"He thinks we're dead," Eleanor whispered, her teeth clattering from the hypothermic chill of the water. "He's going to leave."

Sure enough, after a long, excruciating minute, the SUV’s red taillights flared in the distance. The vehicle turned and sped away down the gravel track toward the highway, leaving the inferno behind.

"We have to get out of the water," Sophia rasped, her lips blue. "Leo can't survive ten minutes in this cold."

Eleanor looked down the coastline. Three hundred yards to the east, past the rocky point, was an old Coast Guard rescue station that had been decommissioned in the 1990s. Its concrete seawall offered shelter from the wind.

"We swim for the point," Eleanor said, grabbing Leo’s collar to help support his weight. "Keep your heads low. Move now!"

They kicked through the dark, freezing swell, fighting the powerful undertow pulling them out into the open ocean. Every stroke was an agonizing battle against hypothermia and exhaustion, but the memory of Marcus’s smug, calculated smile burned in Eleanor’s mind like a nuclear furnace, driving her body forward.

Twenty minutes later, three half-drowned figures crawled up onto the wet gravel shore behind the concrete seawall of the abandoned Coast Guard station.

Sophia collapsed onto her side, coughing up sea water, her body shivering uncontrollably. Leo curled into a ball beside her, his skin pale as chalk.

Eleanor pulled herself upright, leaning against the cold concrete wall. She reached into her soaked blazer pocket.

The two joined silver feather brooches were still there. The blue micro-LED in the stem was still blinking faintly, indicating the hardware drive was undamaged and active.

She looked down at her sister and nephew. They were alive, but they were hunted, penniless, and stranded on the eastern tip of Long Island while the most powerful financial conglomerate in the world believed they were ash.

Eleanor pulled out her burner phone—miraculously water-resistant, wrapped in a sealed plastic bag inside her lining.

She powered it on and dialed a private, unlisted ten-digit number she had memorized ten years ago—a number belonging to the only man in Washington D.C. who hated Marcus Vance more than she did.

"Director Vance," a gravelly voice answered on the second ring. "This line is secured for emergency intelligence protocols only. Who is this?"

"Director Vance," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a register of pure, lethal promise. "This is Eleanor. I have the Vanguard Files. And I'm coming to tear down your brother's empire."
