Chapter 9 - THE MAYFLOWER AUDIT

The Grand Ballroom of the Mayflower Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, tuxedos, evening gowns, and high-stakes political power. Over five hundred foreign diplomats, central bankers, and corporate titans milled about the carpeted hall, sipping expensive champagne while string quartets played softly in the background.
At the podium on the elevated main stage stood Marcus Vance.
He looked radiant—the picture of global financial authority in a bespoke velvet dinner jacket, his silver hair perfectly styled, his smile warm and commanding as he delivered his keynote address on The Future of Global Capital Mobility.
"In an increasingly uncertain world," Marcus’s resonant voice boomed through the high-end sound system, "stability is not merely a goal; it is a commodity. At Apex Global, we believe that true security lies in absolute discretion and unyielding control."
Applause rippled through the distinguished audience. Marcus smiled, pausing to take a sip of water from a crystal glass on the lectern.
Standing near the back of the ballroom, leaning against a marble pillar in the shadows behind a wall of television camera crews, was Eleanor. She wore a simple black turtleneck, trousers, and a heavy press camera hanging from a strap around her neck. Her eyes were fixed on her husband with an intensity that could have bored through solid steel.
Beside her, disguised as a hotel security guard, stood Thomas Vance. He held a small, tactical earbud pressed into his right ear.
"Federal marshals have secured all exits," Thomas whispered to Eleanor. "The tactical teams are in position in the lobby. The moment you initiate the broadcast, we move."
Eleanor reached into her pocket, holding a small wireless transmitter paired directly to the laptop sitting in the FBI van three blocks away.
"Marcus," she whispered softly under her breath. "Your risk assessment has failed."
She pressed the red button on the transmitter.
Instantly, the massive, thirty-foot high-definition LED screens positioned on either side of the stage—which had been displaying the Apex Global corporate logo—flickered violently. The blue logo vanished, replaced by a blinding red screen displaying a single sentence in bold white text:
THE VANGUARD FILES: UNAUTHORIZED ACCOUNT EXPOSURE IN PROGRESS.
A collective gasp echoed through the five hundred guests in the ballroom.
Marcus froze at the podium, his glass of water hovering inches from his lips. The warm, commanding smile vanished from his face, replaced by a mask of sudden, paralyzing confusion.
The LED screens began to scroll through real-time financial transaction logs—showing account numbers, offshore shell company names, and personal wire transfer approvals bearing Marcus Vance’s digital signature. Millions of dollars flowing to illegal weapons manufacturers, sanctioned foreign officials, and private mercenary groups were exposed in ten-foot-high glowing text for every banker and journalist in the room to see.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Marcus barked into the microphone, his voice echoing through the hall, a note of panic cracking through his cultured tone. "Technical team! Shut those screens down immediately!"
"They can't shut them down, Marcus," a voice called out from the back of the room.
The crowd parted as Eleanor stepped out from behind the marble pillar, her press camera hanging at her side, her head held high. She walked slowly down the central aisle toward the stage, her footsteps echoing on the parquet floor.
Marcus gasped, taking a voluntary step back from the lectern, clutching the wood as if he had seen a phantom rising from the grave.

"Eleanor...?" he choked out, his face going completely ash-white. "No... you're... you were in the boathouse..."
"The fire was warm, Marcus," Eleanor said, her voice carrying clearly through the silent, stunned ballroom. "But it wasn't hot enough to burn the truth."
