Chapter 2 - The Transformation Protocol

Fourteen months later.
The floor-to-ceiling mirror inside the private dressing suite of the St. Regis Penthouse reflected a man who did not exist on any government database.
Julian Vance leaned over the Italian marble sink, adjusting the silk necktie of his custom three-piece charcoal-black suit. His face was clean-shaven, highlighting a sharp, aggressive jawline that had been hidden beneath months of beard growth. His brown hair was styled with pomade, every strand precisely positioned. His skin was pale, smooth, and artificially flawless.
To the high-society investors of Manhattan’s financial district, he was now Arthur Pendelton—a mysterious hedge-fund prodigy who had materialized out of Swiss private banking circles with unlimited liquid capital.
Only Julian knew the truth. Behind his crisp white cotton shirt, hidden beneath the tailored vest, his left shoulder bore a raised, dark-purple scar shaped like a three-pointed star.
The toxin the old man had injected into his shoulder via a micro-dermal needle hidden between his fingers had not killed Julian. It had done something far worse. It was a synthetic neuro-inhibitor known in black-market intelligence circles as Phobos-9—a compound Julian himself had helped draft during his dark tenure at Synthex before he blew the whistle and was cast into the streets.
Phobos-9 did not destroy the mind; it rewired it. It suppressed the brain’s capacity for empathy, guilt, and emotional attachment, while hyper-accelerating cognitive processing, pattern recognition, and tactical paranoia. The old man hadn't saved Julian’s life; he had unlocked Julian's inner monster.
For fourteen months, Julian had used his chemically amplified intellect to dismantle three shell corporations, blackmail two federal judges, and engineer a forty-million-dollar hostile takeover of a private security firm. He had transformed himself from a starving, shivering victim on an Eighth Avenue sidewalk into a predatory ghost hunting his creator.
And tonight, the hunt was coming to a close.
Julian reached into the drawer of the mahogany dresser and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound ledger. He opened it to a page containing a high-resolution surveillance photograph taken three days ago near Riverside Park.
The photograph showed the same old man in the brown coat and grey wool flat cap.
Name: Dr. Harold Finch.
Former Director of Behavioral Pharmacology for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
Current Status: Rogue Asset. Operative for The Sovereign, an underground syndicate that specialized in creating untraceable, psychologically conditioned assassins out of the city's invisible homeless population.
Finch didn't feed the homeless out of mercy. He used them as human test tubes. He searched for men with high latent intelligence who had fallen through the cracks of society, infected them with neurological catalysts, and waited for the survival instinct to force them to become lethal tools.
Julian closed the ledger with a heavy snap.
He checked his inner jacket pocket. Inside sat a heavy stack of hundred-dollar bills wrapped in a crisp paper band—fifty thousand dollars in cold, hard cash. Beside it lay a heavy, custom-printed paper grocery bag filled with organic produce, artisanal cheeses, and a specific bottle of vintage red wine.
It was an exact, grotesque inversion of the gift Finch had given him on that frozen sidewalk.

Julian smoothed down the lapels of his black suit coat, checked the suppressed 9mm pistol mounted in his shoulder holster, and looked at his reflection one last time. His eyes were devoid of heat, cold as glacial ice.
"Time to pay the tip, Doctor," Julian whispered to the empty room.
