Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

The Lincoln stopped ten yards from where Julian stood waiting in the drizzle.
The rear door opened, and Victoria Cross stepped out, holding a large black umbrella over her head. She looked at Julian, taking in his blood-soaked shoulder, his ruined suit, and the unconscious body of Clara Mercer resting beneath the container.
"Impressive," Victoria said, stepping forward, her heels clicking crisply against the wet concrete. "You didn't kill her, but you neutralized her. You used a neurological counter-agent. That proves your value as our new Chief Chemist beyond a shadow of a doubt."
She reached into her coat and pulled out a sleek, platinum-plated pen and a document bound in black leather—a master executive contract for The Sovereign.
"Sign this, Julian," Victoria instructed, offering the pen. "The laboratory inside Building 12 is yours. The forty million dollars is in a holding account in the Cayman Islands. You will report directly to the Board of Directors. You have won."
Julian looked at the platinum pen. The ink inside was deep blue.
He looked past Victoria, through the open doors of Building 12, where the centrifuge machines were humming softly, churning out thousands of doses of Phobos-9 destined for transit hubs, refugee camps, and homeless shelters across the globe.
"You really think this is about winning, Victoria?" Julian asked softly.
Victoria’s brow furrowed slightly. "What else could it possibly be about?"
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He tapped the screen once.
Inside Freight Building 12, a high-pitched electronic tone began to chime from the central control server.
Victoria’s eyes widened in sudden panic. She pulled out her tactical tablet.
The screen was flashing bright crimson warnings:
CRITICAL SYSTEM OVERRIDE.
CENTRIFUGE PRESSURE: 400%
THERMAL CATALYST INJECTED.
REVERSE VENTILATION: INITIATED.
"What did you do?" Victoria shrieked, her icy composure shattering in an instant. "What did you do to the facility?!"
"When I took the security drive from you in the car," Julian explained, his voice low and deadly calm, "I didn't just upload Finch's files. I uploaded a volatile execution code into the facility's pressure-control network. In thirty seconds, the entire batch of Phobos-9 inside that room will aerosolize, combine with the industrial cleaning solvents, and trigger a thermobaric explosion that will level this entire dock."
"You lunatic!" Victoria screamed, dropping her umbrella and scrambling toward her car. "You'll destroy everything! You'll kill us all!"
"No," Julian corrected, taking three slow steps backward into the dark fog. "Just your syndicate."
Julian turned and sprinted toward the water’s edge.
Ten seconds later, Freight Building 12 exploded.
A colossal wall of orange and yellow fire erupted into the night sky, blowing the corrugated steel walls of the warehouse outward into the bay like flying shrapnel. The shockwave shattered every window for half a mile, turning the dark waters of the harbor into a boiling, churning cauldron of light and flame.

The black Lincoln was lifted off its tires and hurled fifty yards into the burning debris of the central bay.
Julian threw himself over the concrete seawall, plunging deep into the icy, black waters of the Atlantic Ocean just as the fireball roared over his head.
