Chapter 5 - The Sovereign Syndicate

Julian did not look back as the sound of distant sirens began to wail through the canyon of Upper West Side brownstones.

He walked three blocks south, slipped into the backseat of an idling black Lincoln Continental, and pulled the door shut.

Sitting in the opposite leather seat was a woman in her late thirties. She wore a severe ivory silk suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a tight, flawless bun. On her lap sat an encrypted military tablet displaying live biometric feeds from Finch’s body, which had just flatlined on the steps of his building.

Her name was Victoria Cross, Vice President of Operations for The Sovereign.

"You killed him," Victoria stated. Her voice was flat, devoid of surprise or anger, sounding like an accountant reading a tax audit. "Dr. Finch was a primary asset for this division, Julian."

"Finch was an amateur who played with matches he didn't understand," Julian said, taking a silver flask from his coat and taking a slow sip of ice water. "He thought Phobos-9 was a control mechanism. He failed to realize that when you strip a human mind of fear and empathy, you don't get a obedient slave. You get an apex predator."

Victoria leaned back against the leather headrest, studying Julian with terrifying, calculating eyes.

"You proved your point," she said softly. "Finch initiated sixty-two subjects over the past two years. Sixty of them went insane, suffered fatal brain hemorrhages, or were eliminated by local police. Only two survived the integration process."

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Two?"

"You," Victoria revealed, tapping her tablet screen to display a secondary file, "and Subject 001."

A photo materialized on the high-resolution screen.

Julian’s heart, usually so quiet and regulated by the toxin, gave a sharp, involuntary twitch.

The photo showed a young woman in her late twenties. She had striking violet eyes, dark hair, and a faded surgical scar running along her jawline. She was wearing the uniform of an elite tactical contractor, standing aboard a private container vessel docked in the Port of Newark.

Name: Clara Mercer.

Former combat medic. Subject 001. The first successful integration of Phobos-9.

"Clara does not share your dramatic flair for poetic justice, Julian," Victoria said, her tone cold and businesslike. "She doesn't waste time giving groceries to old men. She is currently overseeing our primary distribution facility in the docks. And as of ten minutes ago... she knows Finch is dead."

"And she wants me dead," Julian observed.

"She views you as an unstable prototype," Victoria corrected. "She believes a mind that still hungers for revenge is a flawed mind. She wants to clean the slate."

Victoria tapped her tablet one last time, unlocking the vehicle’s central console. Inside lay a sleek, matte-black encrypted drive and a security clearance pass for the Port of Newark Freight Terminal 4.

"I am offering you a choice, Julian," Victoria said smoothly. "The Sovereign does not mourn Finch. He served his purpose. But we require a chief chemist to stabilize the next generation of the compound. Go to Newark. Eliminate Clara. Take her position as head of operations, and we will give you forty million dollars and absolute immunity."

Julian looked at the black keycard. He looked up into Victoria’s cold, lifeless face.

May you like

He realized then that The Sovereign was not just a syndicate; it was a Hydra. Finch was merely a single tooth. Victoria was the throat. And Clara was the blade.

"I'll take the drive," Julian said.
